F R I G H T W E L L is a village and parish, 2 miles
aicrth-west from Wallingford, in the Northern division
of the county, Moreton hundred, Wallingford petty ses­
sional division, union and county court district, rural
■deanery of Wallingford, archdeaconry of Berks and
diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Agatha is a build­
ing of stone in the E arly English style, consisting of
•chancel, nave of
three bays, aisles, north porch and
an embattled western tower containing 6 b e lls : in the
church are brasses to John Scoffyld, priest, 1507;
Robert Court, auditor to Prince Arthur, 1509, and Jane,
Kis wife, and to Richard Hampden, 1512, and Jane, his
w ife ; and there are five stained windows ; the rood
stairs remain on the north
s id e : the church
was
thoroughly restored in 1858, the tower having been
rebuilt in 1797; in 1884 it was further restored, at a
«cost of £1,193, and an organ chamber was added in
*903 : there are about 350 sittings, of which about half
are free. The register dates from the year 1564. The
living is a rectory with the chnpelry of Sotwell annexed,
jo in t net yearly value £421, including 40 acres of glebe,
with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford,
i\nd held since 1908 by the Rev. Henry Arthur Sealy
M.A. of Keble College. Oxford. By order in Council of
14th May, 1868, the chapelry of Sotwell was transferred
from St. Leonard’s, in Wallingford, to this parish,
-certain tithes in the parish of Harwell, belonging to
Brightwell, being
transferred to St. Leonard's in ex­
change. As a result of this annexation the ecclesiastical
parish of Brightwell is not now co-terminous with the
civil parish.
Here is a Free church. The Stewart
Memorial Hall was erected by public subscription in
1880, as a memorial to the Rev. James Haldane Stewart,

and is used for parochial purposes. There are bequests
amounting to £67 17s. a year. In 1882 Edward F air­
thorne esq. of this parish, gave £70o Great Eastern
stock to found two scholarships for the advanced educa­
tion of boys brought up in the village school.
The
Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor.
The principal landowners are John W. Betteridge,
W illiam Robert Cozens and W illiam Toovey esqrs.
The land, both arable and meadow, is very good. The
soil is a sandy loam, partly resting on green san d ;
subsoil, chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley
and turnips. The area is 2,054 acres of land and 7 of
w a ter; rateable value, £2,494; the population in 1901
was 632, including 45 in W allingford Workhouse
Cottage Homes.
Mackney, half a mile south-east, and Slade End, half
a m ile east, are hamlets in this parish.

B R IM P T O N is a parish on the borders of Ham p­
shire, 6^ miles east-south-east from Newbury, 2 miles
south from the Mi-dgham station on the Great Western
railway and io f south-west from Reading, in the
Southern division of the county, hundred of Faircross,
p etty sessional division, union and county court dis­
trict of Newbury, rural deanery of Bradfield, arch­
deaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The river
Kennet and the Kennet canal are on the north and
the river Auburn passes on the east, separating the
parish from Wasing. The church of St. Peter, erected
in 1869, on the site of the former church, at the sole
cost of the late James B lyth esq. is a building of flint
with stone dressings in the Decorated style and con­
sists of chancel, nave, north annexe, south aisle, south
porch and western tower with a lig h t and graceful
spire containing a clock and 4 b e lls : most of the
windows are stained, one on the north side being a
memorial to George Henry, Earl ofFalmouth, who died

29 August, 1852; the stained windows on the south
side of the chancel are in m em ory of Edward Golding
B.A. a former vicar of this parish, and are dated 1857:
on the north side of the chancel is one in memory of
Ellen Mary Caffin, wife of the Rev. George Benjamin
Caffin M.A. vicar here from 1840: there are 250
sit­
tings, 150 being free.
The register dates from the
year 1500. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value
from the tithe rent charge £182, with residence, in
the gift of the Rev. J. H. de Courcelles M.A. and held
since 1895 by the Rev. Charles Joseph Taylor B.A. of
Corpus Christi College, Cam bridge. Here is a Baptist
chapel, erected in 1843, with sittings for 140 persons,
and there are a few small charities. The late Countess
of Falmouth, who died May 1, 1864, built and endowed
seven almshouses for the aged and destitute inhabitants
in 1854, under the name of St. Peter’s Almshouses, and
bequeathed £3,000 £2^ per Cent. Consols for their
support. Here, situate on the river Enborne, is a trout
