The Boyal Berkshire Hospital, Beading, opened May
27th, 1839, is a building of stone in the Domestic Classic
style, with a noble projecting portico of six Ionic
columns supporting a pedim ent, adorned with the
Boyal A rm s; two wings, added in 1882, comprise
operating room, library, m useum, chapel, with stained
windows, laundry, servants’ dormitories, and dwellings
for private n u rses; an additional wing, to comprise an
eye theatre, children’s ward and casualty ward, is now
(1911)1 in course of erection. There is a Convalescent
Fund for discharged patients, adm inistered by the
Board of Management. The hospital is supported by
voluntary contributions raised in the county, and has

The County Lunatic Asylum , called the Moulsford
A sylum , was opened in September, 1870; it occupies
a prom inent position on the Wallingford road, threequarters of a m ile from Cholsey and Moulsford station
an d 2 m iles from Wallingford1; it is built of red brick
relieved w ith stone and coloured brick dressings, in a
modified style of E arly E n g lish ; the Asylum stands
on an estate of 80 acres, extending from the W alling­
ford road to the river Thames, form ing nearly a square.
I t was designed to hold 285 patients, at a cost of
£68,600, b u t was enlarged for an additional 324
patients a t a further cost o f ,£55,000, and further en­
larged in 1903 for 200 more patients at a cost of
£50,000. The number of patients is now (1911) 770,
of whom 360 are males and 410 female's; James Wm.

The Broadmoor Crim inal Lunatic Asylum , near
W okingham, which occupies an elevated site about 400
feet above sea level, and partly sheltered by pine woods,
was opened in 1863, and Consists of an extensive range
of brick buildings planned and erected under the e x ­
clusive direction of the late Major-General Sir Joshua
Jebb K .C .B . at a cost of £118,039, and several tim es
altered and en larged; the total am ount expended
reached a sum of £220,000. The Asylum is available

His M ajesty’s Prison for the oounty, in the Forbury,
Beading, was erected in 1833, and is a castellated build­
ing of red brick with white stone dressings, built for
224 prisoners; Capt. Thomas Faulconer M air Wrisden,

Berkshire form erly returned three members for the
undivided county, but under the provisions of the “ R e­
distribution of Seats Act, 1885,” it is now in three
divisions with one member for each division.
No. 1. The Northern or Abingdon division comprises
the sessional divisions of Abingdon, Faringdon, W al­
lingford, and W antage, the m unicipal borough of W al­
lingford and so m uch of the m unicipal boroughs of
Abingdon and Oxford as are in the county of Berks.
No. 2.— The Southern or N ewbury division comprises
the sessional divisions of Ilsley, Lambourne, Newbury
(including Hungerford), and Beading (except so m uch
as is comprised in division No. 3), the m unicipal
boroughs of Newbury and Reading and so m uch of the
Wokingham sessional division as is in the parliam entary
borough of Beading.
No. 3.— The Eastern or Wokingham division com­
prises the sessional divisions of Maidenhead and W ind­
sor, so m uch of the sessional division of W okingham as
is not comprised in division No. 2, the municipal
boroughs of Maidenhead and New Windsor and the
parishes of Swallowfields East and W est.
By the above-mentioned A ct th e representation of
the borough of Wallingford was m erged into th at of
the county and the borough of Beading lost one member.

Reserve Battalion, which latter has its head quarters
