ol acres, given by the late W. Bliss esq. for the join t
use of Chipping Norton and Over Norton, was opened
in 1882: it contains one m ortu ary chapel and is under
the management of the Corporation, acting as a Burial
Board. The Town Hall is a building o f stone in the Classic
style, with a portico, and contains a well-furnished reading
room and a library. On the reform of the Corporation, in
j835, one of the two m aces form erly carried before the two
bailiffs of the old Corporation, was s o ld ; the other, an
object of m uch interest, is now in the possession of
Mr. William Bliss, of W allingford;
it was ori
ginally made in 1606, on the incorporation of the town,
and is' of silver-gilt, and 31 inches in le n g th ; the shaft,
once divided by bands into four sections, retain s one
hexagonal band, and portions of the sh aft are engraved
with tiers or rows of arches, each enclosing a colum
bine; slender brackets support th e head, which was
altered to a non-regal design durin g the Com m on
wealth p erio d ; it still retains the curious reflexed
feather arches which replaced the original cro w n ; but
at the Restoration in 1660 it was re-con verted into a
royal mace, the m otto placed round the head b y the
Puritans erased, and the whole surm ounted by an orb
and cross. The borough seal, which dates from about
the same period, is circular, and bears an em battled
arch flanked by two round towers, encircling w hich is
a marginal legend.
Leather gloves and gaiters are
extensively made here, also woollen goods, and there
is a brewery. The town is situated in an agricultural
district and la rgely depends on th e landed interest.
A maiket is held on W ednesdays, chiefly for grain.
Fairs are held on the first W ednesday in each m o n th ;
cattle and sheep in large num bers are brought here
for sale, and th e fairs are usually well attended by
farmers and d ea lers: there are also statu te fairs on
the Wednesday before and after October 10th, for the
hiring of servants. The Bowyer L o dge of Freem asons, No.
1,036, holds its m eetings at the M asonic Tem ple, Over
Norton road, on the T uesday nearest the fu ll moon (except
in the months of June, July, A u g u st and Septem ber).
There are almshouses in C h u rch street, founded about
1649 by Henry Cornish, for eight widows, w ith an endow
ment of 20s. yearly for repairs, and 2s. per week in
bread; Leach and W est’s ch arity of about ¿ 4 a year is
for decayed trad esm en; and there are several charities for
distribution in kind and m oney, am ounting to about
¿42, including a charity of ¿ 3 19s. xod. a year for
apprenticing poor boys.
The m ayor, alderm en and
burgesses are lords of the manor. Th e principal land
owners are H. Wr. B aker esq. A lb ert B rassey esq. J .P .,
