Th e Royal B erkshire H ospital, Reading, opened May
27th, 1839, is a b uilding of stone in th e D om estic Classic
style, w ith a noble projectin g portico of six Ionic
colum ns supporting a pedim ent, adorned w ith the
Royal A rm s; two w ings, added in 1882, com prise
operating room, library, m useum , chapel, w ith stained
windows, laun dry, servants’ dorm itories, and dw ellings
for p rivate n u rs e s ; additional b uildin gs, com prising
new children ’s and eye w ards, septic and eye theatres,
new casualty, X -ra y and pathological departm ents, were
opened in 1912. There is a Convalescent F und for d is­
charged p atien is, adm inistered by th e Board of M anage­
m ent. Th e hospital is supported by volu n tary con tribu­
tions raised in the county and d istrict, and has 160
b ed s; the num ber treated in 1914 was 2,314 in ­

The C oun ty L u n atic A sylum , called the M oulsford
A sylu m , was opened in Septem ber, 1870; it occupies
a p rom inent position on th e W allingford road, threeq uarters of a m ile from Cholsey and M oulsford station
and 2 m iles from W a llin g fo rd ; it is b u ilt of red brick
relieved w ith stone and coloured brick dressings, in a
modified style of E a rly E n g lis h ; the A sylum stands
on an estate of 80 acres, extending from the W a llin g ­
ford road to the riv er Tham es, form ing nearly a square.
I t was designed to hold 285 patients, at a cost of
¿68,600, but was enlarged for an additional 324 patients
at a fu rth er cost of ¿55,000, and further enlarged in
1902 for 200 more patients at a cost of ¿50,000. The
num ber of patients in Decem ber, 1914, was 810, .of
whom 376 are m ales and 434 fe m a le s ; Jam es W illiam

T h e Broadm oor C rim in al L u n atic A sylum , near
W okingham , w h ich occupies an elevated site about 400
feet above sea level, and p artly sheltered by pine woods,
was opened in 1863, and oonsists of an extensive range
of brick buildings planned and erected under the e x ­
clusive direction of the late M ajor-G eneral Sir Joshua
Jebb K .C .B . at a cost of ¿118 ,0 39, an<^ several tim es
altered and en la rg e d ; the tota l am ount expended
