The County Lu n atic A sylum , although called the Moulsford A sylu m , is in this parish & close to th e Cholsey
station on the G .W .R . ; it was opened in Septem ber,
1870, & occupies a position on th e W allingford
road, three-quarters of a m ile from Cholsey & Moulsford station & 2 m iles from the town of W a llin g Â
ford ; it is b u ilt of red brick, relieved with stone &
colored brick dressings, in a m odified style of E arly
English ; the A sylum stands on an estate of 80 acres,
extending from the W allingford road to the banks of
the river Tham es, form ing nearly a s q u a re ; it was
designed to hold 285 patients, at a cost of £68,600,
but was enlarged for an additional 324 patients at a
cost of about £55,000, Sc further enlarged in 1902 for

200 more patients, at a cost of £50,000; the num ber
of patients is now (1915) 810, of whom 376 are m ales
& 434 fem ales

C L A P C O T , form erly a ham let and liberty in the
parishes of A ll Hallows, W allingford, and W allingford
Castle Precincts, was constituted a separate parish by
Local Governm ent Board O rder No. 31,900, under the
â Local G overnm ent A ct, 1894â (56 & 57 V iet. c. 73).
I t lies two m iles north-east from W allingford, in the
Northern division of the county, Moreton hundred, W a lÂ
lingford petty sessional division, union and county court
d istrict and in the rural deanery of W allingford, archÂ
deaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. T here is no
church. The W allingford and Crow m arsh Joint IsolaÂ
tion H ospital, erected on the high grounds in th is
parish, at a cost of £4,294, was opened 3rd M arch,
1905, w ith accom m odation for 11 p a tie n ts : a new
suspect block w ith six beds was added in 1908, and a
block to contain five beds and two cots is now (1915)
in course of erection : the hospital now provides for 40
patients. W allingford C astle is th e residence of the
Misses H edges. Th e chief landowners are G eorge D.
Faber esq. C .B ., M .P. the M isses Hedges and th e t r u s Â
tees of the late L . P. Powys-Lybbe esq. (d. 1897).
The land, both arable and m eadow, is vej-y good. The
soil is green s a n d ; subsoil, chiefly clay. T h e chief
crops are w heat, barley and roots. T h e area is 856
acres of land and 20 of w a te r; rateable value, £ 1 ,9 9 5 ;
the population in 1911 was 126.
