B R A C K N E L L is an ecclesiastical parish form ed Oct.
24, 1851, out of the parishes of W arfield and W inkfield,
28 m iles from London, 12 south-east from Reading, 8
south from M aidenhead and 9 south-w est from W indsor,
in the E astern division of the county, p etty sessional
division of W okingham , hundred of W argrave, union of
E astham pstead, cou n ty cou rt d istrict of W indsor, rural
deanery of M aidenhead, archdeaconry of B erks and dioÂ
cese of O xford ; it is situated on the forest road from
Reading to London, form ing p art of th e Old F orest of
Windsor, and is surrounded by a heighbourhood fu ll of
picturesque scenery and containing several m ansions and
parks of resident noblemen and gentlem en. T h e B rackÂ
nell station on the S ou th W estern railw ay is in the
parish of E astham pstead. The parish is lig h ted w ith
gas b y the A scot D istrict G as Co. and supplied w ith
water by the W okingham D istrict W ater Co. and the
South W estern and Suburban D istrict W ater Co. The
church of the H oly T rin ity, b u ilt in th e year 1851,
and enlarged in i860, is a stru ctu re of flints in the
E arly Pointed style, and consists of chancel, nave of
three bays, aisles, south porch and a north tower
with picturesque spire containing one bell and a
clock: in 1888 the chancel was reb u ilt and an aisle
added at a cost of £ 1 ,5 1 5 ; a new organ and chancel
seats of oak w ere added in 1894; the stained east
window is a m em orial to Col. B ago t L a n e : there are
380 sittin gs, 180 of which are free. Th e reg ister dates
from the year 1851. T h e livin g is a vicarage, net
yearly value £300, w ith residence, in the g ift of the
Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1886 b y the Rev.
H erbert B arnett M .A . of C h rist C h urch , Oxford, hon.
canon of C h rist Church, O xford, ru ra l dean of M aidenÂ
head, and surrogate. The Mission chapel, at Chavey
Down, is a plain b u ild in g of red b rick, w ith chancel
added in 1900, and a western bell-cot containing one
bell.
The C atholic church of S t. Joseph, in Stan Â
ley road, is an iron building, erected in 1898, and has
260 sittings. The C ongregational chapel, erected in
1S10, was reb uilt in 1859. There is a B ap tist chapel,
erected in 1886, seating 200, also W esleyan and P rim itive
Methodist chapels, and a C hristian Science hall. There
is also a cem etery of 2^ acres in extent containing one
m ortu ary chapel, which is under the control of a burial
board of 9 m em bers. The V ictoria H all, in C hurch
road, b uilt in 1887, is m anaged by trustees and used for
various p ublic purposes. The County Police Station , in
High street, was b u ilt in 1897. A cattle and poultrv
m arket is held here every Thursday at the hack of the
Hindâs Head hotel. L ily H ill, a handsom e m odern resiÂ
dence, b eau tifu lly situated on an elevation and su rÂ
rounded by a park, is the seat of J . S. M cCom b esq.
Holly Sp ring, a pleasant mansion, situated in a park of
about 60 acres, is the seat of M rs. Sheppee. Lord
Braybrooke is lord of the m anor.
