B U C K IN G H A M SH IR E .
The M etropolitan and G reat Central Joint railw ay enters
the county from its term inus at M arylebone, London, a t C h al­
font Road, from near which station is a branch to Chesham ,
passing through Am ersham and W endover to Aylesbury»
w ith a branch to Princes Risborough ; to Quainton Road,
w ith a branch north to Verney Junction, where it joins the
London and North W estern railw ay, and south to Brill,
the line leaving the county for Leicester, Nottingham and
Sheffield.
The London and South W estern railway have a branch
line from Staines to W indsor and Eton.
The m inerals raised in 1912 consisted of chalk, 120 tons ;
b rick clay, 74,727 to n s ; gravel and sand, 3,500 to n s ; lim e­
stone, 1,550 tons, and sandstone, 378 tons.
The chief products are beech, oak, and other tim b e r;
wheat, barley, clover, tares, turnips, h a y ; horses, cows,
oxen, calves, sheep, lam bs, pigs, butter and cream c h eese;
condensed m ilk is prepared a t A ylesbury, and in that neigh­
bourhood ducks are reared, which has now become a large
in d u s tr y ; woven silk, bonnets, lace, shoes and paper are
m a d e ; m any persons are employed in the lace m anufacture,
of which the greater part are females. The m aking of straw
bonnets and hats and the plaiting of straw also em ploy a
num ber of females ; the eastern part of the county, border­
in g on H erts and Beds, is the chief location of the straw
m anufacture. A trade peculiar to the county is that of the
m anufacture of wooden chairs of various patterns, wooden
spades, brush handles, bowls, and various other articles of
turnery from beech and other trees, with which the county
^abounds ; H igh W ycombe is the chief seat of this trade.
