M A R S H A L L is a parish, 3 m iles
north-w est from K in tb u r y station on the G reat W estÂ
ern railw ay, 4 w est-south-w est from N ew bu ry, 7 sou th Â
east from H ungerford, in th e Southern division of the
county, hundred of K in tb u ry E agle, p etty sessional
division, union and cou n ty court d istrict of N ew bury,
ru ral deanery of N ew bury, archdeaconry of Berks and
diocese of O xford. The Avon and K en n et canal, the
river Kennet and the G reat W estern railw ay pass
through the parish. Th e place received its addition,
according to A shm ole, because it â form erly belonged
to the E a rl M arshal of E n glan d and was held by the
tenure of the Rod of the M arshalsea.â Th e ch urch of
St. M ary is a plain stru ctu re of b rick and stone, reerected in the tim e of Jam es I. and consisting of ch anÂ
cel, nave, north aisle, north porch and a tow er of brick
containing 2 b e lls : th e chancel is an cien t and is b uilt
of f lin t : in the ch u rch is an in scribed slab laid over
the tom b of S ir B althazar G erb ier kt. painter and
arch itect, who died while on a v isit here in 1667: there
are 150 sittin g s, 50 being free. T he reg ister dates
from the year 1675. The livin g is a rectory, un ited to
th at of Enborne, jo in t net yea rly value £445, w ith 81
acres of glebe and residence, in the g ift of th e E arl of
C raven, and held since 1892 by the R ev. Charles Blois
Johnson, of W orcester C ollege, O xford, who resides at
Enborne.
There is a sm all C ongregational chapel,
erected in 1809, and seatin g 100 persons. The poorâs
allo tm en t consists of 3a. 2r. 36p. and 1 acre of land
£ 1 in v alu e is held by th e parish clerk ren t f r e e :

am ongst the widows in th is parish who receive no
incom e from the poor rate. T h e m anor, in the reign
of Queen E lizabeth , belonged to the Parrys, and Sir
Thom as P arry, treasu rer to the household of th at
queen, b u ilt a house h e r e : about 1620 th is m anor
passed by purchase to th e Cravens and becam e one
of th e chief seats of th at fam ily. In 1626 (12th M arch)

Lord M ayor of London 1610 and 1618, w as created
Baron C raven of H am pstead-M arshall and in 1664-5
E arl of Craven, for services w hich he had rendered
to his exiled m aster d urin g th e p rotectorate of C rom Â
well and th e losses w hich he h ad sustained by conÂ
fiscation. The earldon exp ired on th e death of the
earl, 9th A p ril, 1697, b u t was revived (18th June, 1801)
in the person of W illiam , seventh Baron C raven . The
house b u ilt by S ir T. P arry having been pulled down,
Sir B althazar G erbier kt. began a stately pile of b u ild Â
ing after the m odel of the castle of H eidelberg, which
was finished in 1665, b ut this house was alm ost w holly
destroyed b y fire in 1718. T he present m ansion, erected
by the E arl of C raven about 1720, has been from tim e
to tim e e n la rg e d : the deer park extends over more
than 400 acres, w ith a series of sm all lakes across i t :
it belongs to the E arl of Craven, b u t is in the occupaÂ
tion of M rs. B rad ley M artin. The E arl of Craven is
lord of th e m anor and principal landowner. The soil
is lig h t and g ra velly and some portion stiff clay ; subÂ
soil, clay and sand. Th e chief crops are w heat, barley,
oats &c. T h e area is 1,824 acres of land and 28 of
w a ter; rateable value, .£2,066; th e population in 1911
was 239.
