M A R C H A M , w ith th e ch apelry of G arford and the
township of F rilfo rd, is a p arish in the Northern
division of the county, hundred of Ock, p etty sessional
■division, union and cou n ty court d istrict of Abingdon,
rural deanery of A bingdon, archdeaconry of Berks, and
■diocese of Oxford. Th e riv er Ock bounds the parish
on the south. M archam is 2J m iles w est from A b in g ­
don. The church of A ll Sain ts, reb u ilt in 1837 and
opened on E aster day, 1838, is a spacious edifice of
stone in the Perpendicular style, con sistin g of chancel,
nave, south porch and a w estern E a rly E n g lish tower
containing a clock and 6 b e lls : there are 400 s it t in g s :
the church was re-seated in 1901, when a new organ
was presented, th e total cost, in clu d in g g ifts, was
about £ 1,100 . T h e reg ister, in clu d in g G arford , dates
from the year 1658. T h e liv in g is a vicarage, w ith
the chapelry of G arford annexed, join t net yea rly value
£210 , in clu d in g 113 acres of glebe, w ith residence, in
the g ift of the Dean and C h ap ter of C h rist C h urch ,
O xford, and held since 1910 by th e Rev. A rth u r
Pickard H all M .A . of K eble College, Oxford. H ere is i
a sm all B ap tist chapel. A cem etery of one acre was
consecrated 4th F eb ruary, 1899, and is under the control of a join t com m ittee, consisting of 6 m em bers of
the parish council and three m em bers for Frilford.
The In stitu te and R eadin g Room was b u ilt and presented in 1905 by A rth u r H enry Anson esq. for the use
of the inhabitants. T h e charities are of the annual
value of about £ 5 7 , £20 of w hich is for cloth in g the
poor children in the parish.
Sheepstead House, one m ile north, is the property
and residence of Mrs. M orland. Upwood Park, situated
about 3 m iles north-w est, stands in a well-wooded park
of 87 acres and is the property and residence of John

M isses Anson. O akley House is the p roperty and re s i­
dence of F ran k Gore-Brown© esq. K .C ., M .A. The
principal landow ner is C h arles John E dw in Duffield
esq. who is lord of the manor. Th e soil is sand and
stone b ra s h ; subsoil, rock. The population, including
the tow nship of F rilford and ch apelry of G arford, in
1911 was 951, v iz .: M archam , 692; G arford, 127; F r il­
ford, 132. Th e area of the parish is 2,417 acres of land
and 7 of w a te r; the chapelry of G arford, 1,068; and of
Frilford, 1,238; rateable value of M archam , £3,968;
F rilfo rd, £1,062, and G arford, £1,049.

The ancient chapel of St. Lu k e, entirely reb uilt in 1880,
w ith the addition of a north aisle, at a cost of £1,295.
is an edifice of stone in th e E a rly E n glish style, from
designs by the late M r. Edwin Dolby, architect, of
Abingdon," and consists of chancel, nave of four bays,
north aisle and south p orch : the in terestin g old oak
screen has been restored : M iss E. H. A ldw orth , of
Frilford, worked and presented a beautiful frontal' for
the com m union tab le :

m em orials. H ere is a W esleyan chapel. The President and Fellows of S t. John’s College, Oxford, who
are lords of the manor, and L a d y W antage, are the
principal landowners.
FR ILF O R D is a township one m ile north-w est. Here
is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1841, w ith 200 sittings. A golf course of 18 holes, the property of the
Frilford Heath G olf Co. was opened in 1909; a club
house adjoins the course. In 1883 rem ains of a Roman
