la rg e mansion stan din g in grounds of 150 acres which
contain some fine tim ber. Haines H ill, a large mansion,
stan din g in a p ark of 130 acres, is the seat of W illiam
C harles G odsal esq. H u rst C ourt, a m ansion of red
brick, standing in the grounds of 70 acres, is occupied
by Philip H. M artineau esq. H urst Court, form erly
known as H u rst Lodge, was a t one tim e the residence
of a stew ard to H enry V I D .; the house is a Jacobean
building. Lord Braybrooke is lord of the m anor. The
princip al landowners are John H enry Leveson-G ower
esq. and W illiam C harles G odsal esq. The soil is
m o stly loam and g ra v e l; subsoil, gravel and clav. The
chief crops are w heat, barley and oats. The area of
H urst S t. N icholas c iv il parish is 2,972 acres of land
and 16 of w a te r; assessable value, ¿ 5 ,3 4 1 ; the popu’ a- !

E A S T I L S L E Y (or M arket Ilsley, an cien tly Hildesle y ) is a sm all m arket town and p arish , and head of a
p etty sessional division, 9 m iles north from N ew bury,
10 from W antage, 11 south from Abingdon, 2 m iles
north-w est from Com pton station on the D idcot and
W inchester railw ay, in the Southern division of the
cou nty, hundred of C om pton, union and cou n ty court
d istrict of W antage, ru ra l deanery of Newbury’, arch ­
deaconry of B erks and diocese of O xfo rd ; it is situated
on the side of a h ill, surrounded b y downs, w hich e x ­
tend for some m ile s ; a p art of these is cu ltiv ated and
the rem ainder used as sheep w alks. The church of

St. M ary is a sm all buildin g of stone and rubble in
m ixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays,
aisles, north porch and low em battled western tower
of the D ecorated period, containing 5 bells, dated
1412-1625, and a clo ck : th e south arcade of the nave
has T ransition Norm an arches, b ut th e south aisle is
E arly E nglish, the north bein g m odern: the ch urch
was enlarged and re-pewed in 1845, and in 1881-2 the
south aisle was restored and the fine old roof d is­
closed ; th e entrance to the rood lo ft and a piscina were
also discovered; the g a lle ry in front of th e w est w in ­
dow was rem oved, a N orm an font, w hich was found
