G H E T W O D E is a parish separated from O xfordshire
by a feeder of th e riv er Ouse, sh m iles south-by-east
from F ul well and W estb u ry station on the O xford and
Bletchley section of the London and N orth W estern railÂ
way, 5 south-w est from B uckingham and 6 north-east
from Bicester, in the N orthern division of the county,
hundred, p etty sessional division, union and county
court district of Buckingham , and in the rural deanery
of Buckingham , archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese
of Oxford. The church of SS. M ary and N icholas, the
chancel of which belonged to the conventual church, was
made parochial in 1480 ; it consists of chancel, nave, north
and south aisles or chapels and a low tower at the northÂ
west angle containing one b e ll: the chancel is a fine
example of E a rly E nglish ; the whole east end is occupied
by five graceful lancets w ith bold m ouldings and slender
sh afts; the north and south aisles aTe ligh ted b y trip lets
of similar character and on the south side is a rich arcade
with light shafts supporting foliated caps and the toothed
ornament in the m o u ld in g s : one arch of this arcade
serves as a priestâ s doorway, and oth er arches as sed ilia;
the remains of ancient stained glass in th e eastern
windows, representing five figures, were some tim e since
removed to the south window of th e chancel and the
windows refilled w ith new stained glass of no particu lar
m erit: in the chancel is a slab inscribed to R isley
Risley, 17 5 5 : during Tepairs to the church about 1868,
portions of the original tiled pavin g of th e church
were discovered, both below th e existin g floor and in
the yard in front, form erly covered by the nave of
"the conventual c h u r c h : in the m iddle of the south
aisle, close to the wall, a slab was found, incised w ith
an eight-cusped floriated cross, and w ith a m arginal
inscription in Norman-French, which, when perfect, Tan,

"Giffard, of Twyford, c. 1350; one of th e tiles found
appears to bear th e arm s of this fam ily, v iz .: 3 silver

north chapel and the walls of th e chancel, except part
the south side, w ere taken down and r e b u ilt : there

annexed to th at of Barton H artshorn, jo in t net yearly
value £85, in cludin g 46 acres of glebe at A dstock, and
residence, in the g ift of M ajor G . F. G reen J.P . and
is at present ( 1915 ) vacant.
Here was a p riory of
A ugustin e canons, founded either by Bishop G rostete,
of Lincoln, in 1240, or by Sir Ralph de N orw ich, in
1244, in honour of S t. M ary and S t. N ic h o la s : it
was dissolved on account of its poverty in 1460 and
annexed to the abbey of N o tle y ; but in 1480, on
account of the dilapidated state of th e parish church,
th at of th e priory was opened for divine worship.
Th e old p arish church of S t. M artin, w hich stood a
quarter m ile east of the priory, was pulled down in
the reign of Queen E lizabeth. There was also here a
herm itage, dedicated to S S . Stephen and Law rence,
founded b y a m em ber of th e Chetw ode fam ily. The
Rhyne toll of Chetwode, an ancient and sin gular rig h t
' exercised b y th e Chetwodes, begins at 9 oâclock on the
m orning of th e 30th of O ctober, when a horn is blown
¡ on the ch urch hill at Buckingham , and gin g er bread and
beer are distributed am ong the assem bled boys, the
girls, by custom , not being ad m itted to any share in the
¡ b o u n ty ; th e b earer of the cakes and ale then proceeds
1 through the v illag e of Tin gew ick to the extrem e bounÂ
dary of th e county tow ards O xfordshire, where, in front
of th e Red Lion inn, near Finm ere, 3 m iles distant, the
horn is again blown and a fresh distribution takes place,
under the sam e custom ary lim ita tio n ; on the conclusion
of these form alities, the Rhyne is proclaim ed to have
begun, and tw o toll collectors are stationed, one in the
town of B uckingham and another in th e ham let of Gawcott, a m ile and a half distant, each em powered to levy
a tax at the rate of 2s. a score upon all cattle or swine
driven th rou gh any of the townships or ham lets from
which the lord of the m anor claim s suit and service,
until 12 oâclock at n ig h t on the 7th Novem ber, when the
Rhyne c lo se s : th e farm ers and occupiers of land in those
parishes have been accustom ed to com pound for im Â
m unity from this toll b y an annual paym ent of is . each,
but in every case in which paym ent has been resisted,
toll has been u ltim ately recovered, eith er b y le g al pro-
