BUCKINGHAM,SH IRE.

1897, it has been undenom inational; the resident nurses
attend patients in the town and villages of the neighbour
hood : the present building was presented by the late Lord
Addington, in comm emoration of the preservation from
death of his eldest son, who was thrown from his h o rs e :
¡t is a handsome and well-arranged structure pleasantly
situated on the side of a hill, and was opened in 1887. The
object of the home is to relieve the suffering of the sick,
especially of the sick poor, in B uckingham and its neigh
bourhood, by placing within their reach skilled and
experienced nursing, and also to receive into the home
suitable cases which cannot be adequately treated at the
home of the patient. The m edical men of the town
give their services free.
There is a m altin g in th e town, a condensed m ilk
m anufactory, one w ater and steam corn and flour m il l;
the poorer fem ale inhabitants are em ployed in m aking
pillow lace.
The Buckingham general charities are divided into
three branches, viz. :— Alm shouses, E ducational and
Eleemosynary. The almshouse branch comprises C hrist’s
Hospital, founded in 1597 by Queen E lizabeth, and re
built in 1897 at a cost of about ¿800, and again rebuilt
in 1910 at a cost of about ¿700 , and Barton’s H ospital,
founded in 1431 by John Barton, sen. of Buckingham .
Each of these almshouse buildings contains residences for
six poor women, who receive 5s. each weekly. Th e in
come of the almshouse branch proper is only about ¿ 3 1 ,
and the balance required to m eet the above paym ents is
taken from the E leem osynary branch. Th e E ducational
branch com prises Newton’s ch arity of ¿ 2 6 for education
and clo th in g; H art’s charity of about ¿ 9 and Sir
Bichard T em p le’s of about ¿ 1 3 , each for apprentice
ships.
The E leem osynary branch includes L ad y Pene
lope Osborne’ s charity of ¿ 1 2 ; Sir Sim on B ennett’s of
about ¿ 1 7 ; H iggens’s of about ¿ 7 3 ; L a d y B ago t’s of

is an Organ charity, th e incom e of which, ¿ 1 5 15s. is
applied in aid of the salary paid to th e church organists.
Harrison’s charity of about ¿ 8 5s. for paralytics, and the
Poor’s allotment, 14 acres near G aw cott Wood, producing
about ¿ 2 0 yearly, which is expended in coal for the poor.
