thickly grown w ith d e cid u o u s tre e s an d e v e rg re e n s , the
lawns around w hich are sh a d e d on t h e s o u th and east
sides by avenues of a n c ie n t lim e s an d m a g n ifice n t c h e s t ­
nuts ; and on th e w e s t sta n d s a b o x su n d i a l : th e n o rth
and east sides are b o u n d ed b y th e old c ity w a ll, w ith its
crenellated bastions, p o stern and “ a lu r e ” o r p a ra p e t w alk,
and the steps le a d in g th e re to , s t ill in ta c t, a n d c a r e ­
fully repaired in 1906: n o rth of th e c h a p e l is a s lip of
ground called th e “ S lip e ,” a t t h e en d of w h ic h stan d s
the tow er; th is is of five s ta g e s w it h an e m b a ttle d
parapet and angle t u r r e t , a n d co n ta in s a v e r y fine
peal of 10 bells, d a te d r e s p e c t iv e ly 17 12 (2 ), 1655.
1703, 1672 and th e re s t 1 7 2 3 : b e tw e e n th e o ld c ity
wall and H olyw ell s t r e e t is th e th ir d q u a d ra n g le , the
buildings of w hich, m a in ly fo u r s t o r e y s in h e ig h t, are in
the Perpendicular s ty le , and w e re b u ilt in 1872-5, a t a
cost of £ 20,000, fro m d e s ig n s b y th e la t e S ir G ilb e r t
Scott R .A .; d u rin g 1882, a lte ra tio n s w ere m a d e in th e
kitchen wing, and in 1886 an d 1898 a fu r t h e r b lo ck , in
the same style, w as ad ded to t h is q u a d ra n g le , fro m
designs by M r. B a sil C h a m p n e y s, and th e fro n ta g e to
Holywell street is now 370 fe e t, an d in c lu d e s a la r g e
