P A D W O R T H is a parish on the K ennet. one m ile
south-east of A lderm aston station on the H ungerford
branch of the G reat W estern railw ay, and 8$ south-west
from Reading, in the Southern division of the county,
hundred of Theale. union of Bradfield, p etty sessional
division and countv cou rt d istrict of Reading, rural
deanery of Bradfield, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese
of Oxford. The church of S t. John the B ap tist is a
v ery ancient buildin g of flint and rub b le of Norm an
date, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, south porch
and a wooden tower over the w estern gable containing
6 b ells, dated respectively 1654, 1660, 1816, 1597 and
19 00 ; the other is sim plv inscribed: “ SANCTA-+M A R I A + O R A -fP R O -l-N O B lS : ”
the wall« are all of
N orm an w ork, w ith inserted P erpendicular windows, and
the Norm an chancel arch has sculptured c a p s : the north
and south doorways are recessed and have ornam ented
arc h e s: the church was restored in 1890, at a cost of
¿1.50 0 . the chancel by the rector, and the nave by
Mrs. D arby-G riffith . the tow er and b elfry bv Mr.
Benyon and local su b s c rib e rs : there are 100 sittings.
The register dates from the year 1607. Th e livin g is a
rectory, net yea rly value ¿ 1 7 4 . w ith residence and 27
acres of glebe, in the g ift of the Lord C hancellor, and
held since 1888 bv the Rev. W illiam O sbert Clinton
M.A. of T rin ity C ollege. C am bridge. There is a charity
of ¿ 9 13s. 4d. yearly, present value for fuel, besides a
bread and clo thing eharitv. and another of ¿ 8 7s. 4d.

handsom e mansion standing on an em inence in fine
park-like grounds facing the Bath road, is the residence
of M ajor C hristopher W illiam D arby-G riffith J.P .
M ajor C. W . D arby-G riffith, who is lord of the manor,
and Jam es H erbert Benyon esq. (lord-lieutenant of the
county), are the principal landowners. The soil is
g r a v e l; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley,
oats and roots. T h e area is 1,089 acres of land and 21
of w a ter; gross rateable value, ¿ 2 ,7 7 9 ; th© population
in 1911 was 263.
