area of the p arish is 4,260 acres ol land and' 11 of
w a t e r ; rateable value, ¿8 ,2 5 1 ; the entire population
of the parish in 1911 was 1,466.
C L IF T O N is a ch apelry and ham let of D eddington,
on the road from Aynho station to D eddington, and
about, a mile and a half east on the N orthants border,
skirted by the riv er C h erw ell, the O xford and B irm in g ­
ham canal and the G reat W estern railw ay. Th e church
of S t. Jam es, consecrated June 10th, 1853, is a plain
b uilding of stone, consisting of nave, w ith south porch
and a western tu rre t containing 2 bells, and was built
chiefly a t th e expense of the la te Rev. W . C. R isley
M .A. vicar of Deddington, 1836-48 ; the clergy of Ded­
dington officiate. Here is a W esleyan chapel, b u ilt in
1869

H E M PTO N is a small h am let in the parish of Deddington, a m ile and a quarter west from the village
on the road to Chipping Norton. T h e C hurch of St. Joh^
the E van gelist, b u ilt a t the oost of the late Rev. William
W ilson D.D. of Over W orton, consists of nave with north
aisle (used as a school) and a bell-cote containing one
beR: the font was form erly in th e old church at Over
W orton: th e b uilding is the property of trustees, and
is licensed b ut unconseorated: it is served from Deddington : there are 100 sittings. Here is a Congregational
Mission H all, erected in 1828, seating 80 persons. The
poor’s land of 7 acres, awarded in 1808, produces A
yearly for fuel.
