The shafts, 125 in n u m b e r, a re sp e cim e n s of th e m o st
important rocks of th e B r itis h isla n d s, Avhile th e ca p ita ls
are ex q u isitely c a rv e d in im ita tio n of n a tu ra l p la n ts and
foliage; upon th e p ie rs are s ta tu e s of em in en t sc ie n tific
men? ancient an d m o d e rn . T h e th e a tre or le ctu re -ro o m ,
also on th e first floor, is a fine a p a r tm e n t an d w ill se at
320 people ; it is a m p ly s u p p lie d w it h g a s , w a te r and
drainage, fo r e x p e r im e n t s : th e te a c h in g d e p a rtm e n ts

In v a r io u s p a rt s of t h e b u ild in g are
offices and la b o ra to rie s s e t a p a rt fo r th e u s e of d iffe re n t
professors and s tu d e n ts , w h ic h a re n o t open to p u b lic
view. In 1872 a new w in g , e r e c te d in 1869-70, a t a co st
of £10,282, w as ad d e d to t h e m u s e u m b y th e C la re n d o n
/trustees for th e d e p a rtm e n t of e x p e rim e n ta l p h ilo so p h y.
This b u ild in g , k now n as th e C lare n d o n la b o ra to ry , is of
stone, and co n ta in s a la r g e le c t u r e -t h e a tr e an d la b o r a ­
tories for c a r r y in g on e x p e rim e n ts in h e a t, l ig h t , e le c ­
tricity &c. and in 1887 a d d itio n s w e re m a d e fo r th e
.purpose of p ro v id in g ro o m fo r e le c tr ic lig h t in g m a c h in e ry ,
and for th e s t u d y o f th is b ra n c h o f e le c tr ic sc ien c e. In
1884 a b u ild in g w as e re c te d in th e n o rth -e a s t c o rn e r of
the grounds fo r th e d e p a rtm e n t of p h y s io lo g y .
In
1891-2 a co n sid e rab le a d d itio n w as m ad e on th e e a st
side of the m ain b u ild in g fo r th e d e p a rtm e n t of h u m an
anatomy: th e n ew blo ck , c o n s tru c te d of B o x sto n e,
from plans b y M r. H . W . M oore, a rc h ite c t, o f O x ­
ford, co m p rises a b a s e m e n t w it h ta n k ro o m a n d o th e r
rooms and o ffic e s ; g r o u n d floor, co n ta in in g a d isse c tin g
room, m u seu m , s u rro u n d e d b y a g a lle r y , le c tu r e -th e a tr e
and other a p a rtm e n ts , a n d fir s t flo o r, on w h ic h is a m ic r o ­

The ex te n siv e co lle c tio n il l u s t r a t iv e o f a n th ro p o lo g y ,
made by G en era l P it t R iv e r s F .R .S ., F .S .A . is p la c e d in
a large a p a rtm e n t to t h e e a s t of t h e m a in c o u r t. T h e
new P a th o lo g ica l la b o r a to r y , e r e c te d in 1901 w it h in th e
grounds of th e m u se u m , is a s t r u c tu r e of B a th stone
and red b rick , fro m d e sig n s b y M r. J . A u g u s t u s S o u t t a r ;
it consists of a su n k b a s e m e n t a n d tw o flo o rs, c o m ­
prising a le c tu re ro o m and m u s e u m , re s e a rc h ro o m for
experim ental p a th o lo g y , la b o ra to ry fo r c h e m ic a l re s e a rc h ,
and other room s for th e s tu d y o r te a c h in g of p a th o lo g ica l
histology and b a c te rio lo g y , besides a p h o to g ra p h ic stu d io ,
