C A L V E R T O N is a scattered villag e and parish,
separated from Northam ptonshire b y the riv er Ouse, 3
m iles south-w est from W olverton station on the London
and N orth W estern railw ay, 1 south-w est from Stony
S tratford, 7^ south-w est from N ew port Pagnell, in the
N orthern division of th e county, hundred and county
c o u rt d istrict of N ew port Pagnell, Stony Stratford petty
sessional division, union of Potterspury, ru ral deanery
and archdeaconry of B uckin gh am and diocese of Oxford. A
brook, a trib u ta ry of the Ouse, form s th e boundary between
tbi9 cou n ty and N ortham ptonshire. B y a Local G overnÂ
m ent Board O rder dated M arch 25, 1883, a detached
p art of this parish, known as Stratford B ridge Meadows,
was am algam ated w ith S tratford S t. G iles. The church
o f A ll Saints, rebuilt of stone in 1818, has since been
fu rth er restored and a south aisle added by the Rev. the
Hon. Charles G eorge Perceval, rector 1820-58; it is an
edifice in the M iddle-Pointed and Norm an styles, and
consists of chancel, nave of th ree bays, south aisle, south
porch and a fine w estern tower containing 6 bells, a
sixth havin g been added in 1905, when also the other
5 were re -h u n g : in 1897 a flagstaff was erected on the
tow er in com m em oration of the Diam ond Jubilee of
H er late M ajesty Queen V icto ria : in the course of the
restoration the chancel was decorated in polychrom e,
the stained glass of the ea st window renewed, and the
panels of the pulpit filled w ith figures of St. John the
B ap tist, S t. Paul, S t. P eter and S t. B arn a b a s: the west
door, for a lo n g tim e blocked, was re-opened, and the
font placed in the lower stage of the tower, which now
serves as a b a p tis te ry : all the windows are s ta in e d :
the area is seated w ith open benches and paved with
encaustic t ile s : the reredos is adorned w ith m osaics,
representing the Adoration of the M a g i: the entire
restoration was carried out under the direction of Mr.
E. H . Sw infen H arris, arch itect, of Stony S tratford :
there are 220 sittin gs. Th e reg ister dates from the
year 1559. T he livin g is a rectory, net yearly value
£258, p rin cip ally arisin g from 390 acres of glebe, with
residence, in the g ift of th e E a rl of E gm on t, and held
since 1901 b y the Rev. Robert F rederick R um sey M.A.
of Brasenose College, Oxford. N ear the church are six
alm shouses, erected by th e late Rev. the Hon. C. G.
Perceval, a form er rector, who died 26 J uly, 1858, and
there are ch arities am ounting to about ^ 12 yea rly for
distribution in coal besides about £29 for apprenticing
and £ 1 for general purposes. There is also a coat
ch arity for supplying 9 coats annually to m en belonging
to th e parish-. W illiam Selby-Lowndes, jun. esq. J.P.
is lord of the m anor. T he E arl of E gm on t and the
Marquis of Lincolnshire K .G ., P .C ., G .C .M .G . are the
principal landowners. The soil is lig h t and stiff c la y ;
subsoil, clay and stone. T he ch ief crops are wheat,
oats, beans and barley. Th e area is 1,981 a c re s; rateÂ
able value, ^4,30 4; the population of the ecclesiastical
parish in 19 n was 245 and 1,075 in' t^e civil, which
includes Calverton E n d of Stony Stratford.
L O W E R W E A LD , w hich adjoins C alverton on the
west, and M IDDLE W E A LD half a m ile south-east, and
UPPER W E A LD 1 m ile south-east, are p arts of this
parish.
