F A W L E Y is a pariah of scattered houses, on the
borders of O xfordshire and bank of the Tham es, 3
miles north from H enley-on-Tham es term inal station
of a branch of the G reat W estern railway, and 7 west
from Marlow, in the Southern division of the county.

Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. Th e
church of
the Virgin M ary is a small b uilding of cu t flint with
stone dressings, w hich has been m uch altered, and con­
sists of chancel, nave, transepts, organ cham ber and
an ancient em battled western tower containing 3 bells :
the tower was restored in 1867 and its lower stage forms
a p orch: the nave Was thoroughly restored and a north
transept w ith organ cham ber and vestry added in 1883 :
the south transept, form erly used as a vestry, is thrown
open to the c h u rc h : the church contains a fine canopied
monument of black m arble, w ith recum bent figures in
stone, erected b y S ir B ulstrode W hitelocke kt. keeper
of the G reat Seal during the P rotectorate, to his
parents, S ir Jam es W hitelocke kt. Justice of th e K in g ’s
Bench, ob. 22 June, 1632, and his wife E lizabeth (B ul­
strode) ; the m onum ent is surm ounted on either side
with figures of M ercy and Justice and is adorned with
escutcheons of a r m s ; the carvin g on the p ulpit and
elsewhere in the church is said to be by G rin lin g
Gibbons: in th e churchyard is a handsome m auso­
leum for each of th e fam ilies of Freem an and
Mackenzie: a ly c h gate of oak and stone was erected
in 1885 b y his relatives in mepaory of the Rev.
Henry Alm ack D.D. rector 1843-85: there are 150 s it­
tings. The reg ister dates from the year 1573. The
living is a rectory, net yearly value £280, w ith residence
and 22 acres of glebe, in the g ift of W. D. Mackenzie
esq. and held since 1907 b y the Rev. W alter Cape!
Young M.A. of T rin ity College, C am bridge. Th ere is a
Village H all, erected by subscription. F aw ley C ourt, the
seat of W illiam D alziel M ackenzie esq. M .A ., D .L ., J.P.

is a noble mansion in the Palladian style, and was
erected, it is said, from designs by S ir C hristopher
W re n ; it stands in a w ell-tim bered park, and has four
fronts, the principal entrance being on the w est, through
a colonnaded portico of the Ionic o rd e r; the house con­
tains some fine apartm ents, and com m ands a view of th e
Deer park, of th e Chiltern H ills on the n o rth -w est; the
riv er Tham es is on the south-east, Ham bleden on the
north and H enley on the s o u th ; in the dining-room
hangs the celebrated p icture, by Salter, of the W aterloo
banquet at Apsley House, and on
the staircase are
num erous portraits of the g u e s ts ; th e possessor of this
estate in the reign of Charles I. was S ir Jam es W h ite­
locke kt. one of the ju d g es of the K in g 's Bench, whose
only son (S ir B ulstrode W hitelocke k t .) , previously m en ­
tioned, sold it to an ancester of the la te W. P. W illiam s
Freem an esq. of P ylew ell Park, Hants, by whom th e
estate was in turn
disposed of to the late Edward
M ackenzie esq. ; an extensive w in g in the same style
was b uilt in 1883 at the north-east a n g le ; it c o m ­
prises a study, b illiard and sm oking rooms, lavatories
and num erous bedrooms ; a handsome balustraded ter­
race on two levels has also been constructed round th e
whole mansion, the w alls of w hich have also been re­
newed in brick and stone. W . D. M ackenzie esq. is lord
of the m anor and principal landowner. The soil is o f a
ch alk y n a tu r e ; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief
crops are wheat, barley and some pasture land. The
area is 2,204 acres of land and 9 of w a t e r ; rateablevalue, £2,263 > th e population in 1911 was 218.
