'w er containing a clock and 6 bells: in the chancel,
which is enriched w ith diaper w ork, are several stained
w indow s: the ceilin g of the aisle is divided into forty
. im partm ents, ornam ented w ith the arm s of the various
original con tributo rs: Dr. W illis, who died 5th Feb.
1760, a g e 78, was buried in the chancel beneath a slab of
white m arble, inscribed w ith an epitaph w ritten by h im Â
self: in A p ril, 1884, the w est window was filled with
stained glass as a m em orial to the Rev. F ran cis de L a cy
W hite B .A . vicar 1881-3, and in the same year the church
was restored, a t a cost of £605, un der the direction of
Mr. F. G . B ruton , arch itect, of O xford, an illum in ated
clock being at th e sam e tim e placed in th e tow er a t a
cost of £ 10 0 : in 1898 th e organ was renovated at a cost
f £500, and two m em orial windows placed to Mrs.
Stubbs and M rs. S o m ers: there are 600 s it t in g s : since
the cem etery has been opened the churchyard has been
very p rettily laid out w ith flower-beds. The livin g is a
vicarage, net yearly value £200, w ith 57 acres of glebe
and residence, in the g ift of the Bishop of O xford, and
held since 1909 by the Rev. John H erbert F irm in ger
M .A. of E x e ter College, Oxford. The v icarage house is
a b u ild in g in the G othic style, erected in 1869.
St.
M artinâs Mission Room , erected in 1886 and enlarged in
1888, is now used for services. Th e Spurgeon M em orial
B aptist chapel, A ylesb ury street, is a structure of red
brick w ith w hite stone facings, erected in 1892 at a cost
f about £3,000, and has 750 sittin gs ; the chapel was
formed in 1800. T h e Prim itive M ethodist chapel in
A ylesbury street, b u ilt in 1866, seats 240 persons, and
:h a t in A lb ert street, b u ilt in 1898, seats 150.
The
W esleyan chapel in B letch ley road was erected in 1909,
at a cost of £2,500, and w ill seat 350 persons. The
Salvation A rm y also has barracks here in C hurch street.
The C em etery, situated in W ater Eaton road, to the
south of th e tow n, and opened in i860, is 6,233 square
yards in exten t, and contains two m o rtu ary chapels in
the G othic s tyle: it is controlled by th e Urban Council.

The celebration of St. M artinâs day, Novem ber n th .
regu larly m aintained by Dr. Browne W illis durin g his
life, is still observed h e r e ; the proceeds from two
cottages in A ylesb ury street, left by the doctor, are used
for the p u rp o se ; Divine service is held in the church in
the m orning, and in the evening a dinner takes place in
the H igh S treet schools, the occasion being also marked
by repeated salvoes from six little pieces of ordnance of
curious size and shape, used from tim e im m em orial, and
known as â th e Fenny Poppers.â A cattle m arket is held
fortn igh tly on Thursday and the fairs are held on April
1 19th and October n t h . Considerable quantities of fruit
and flowers are grown in the extensive nurseries here and
sent to all parts of th e K ingdom ; straw plait and lace
were at one tim e m ade here in large quan tities, but of
late years this handicraft has nearly cea sed ; brush
m akin g and coiled paper m akin g is extensively carried on
here. A w eekly newspaper, the â N orth Bucks Tim es,"
is published every F riday. There are charities of about
£30 yea rly for bread, blankets and clothin g, and a sum
of £ 1 for distribution. Dropshort, to the east of the
town, is supposed to have been the Rom an station
â M agioventum ,â num erous Rom an coins and other
rem ains having been discovered here.
There is a
recreation ground of 10 acres, w ith band stand. B letch Â
ley Park is the seat of S ir H erbert S am uel Leon bart
J . P . ; the mansion is a noble * stru ctu re of red brick,
approached on the north and south by v e ry fine avenues
of elm s. S ir E verard P. D Pauncefort-D uncom be bart
who is lord of the m anor, and Sir H. S . Leon bart
are the principal landowners. The area of the civil
parish is 1,034 acres of cultivated land and 6 of w ater;
assessable value, £20,790; in 1911 th e population was
