stru ctu re of flint w ith stone dressings in th e later E arly
E nglish style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays,
south aisle, south porch and a w estern tow er, 56 feet
high, containing 5 b e lls ; at th e south-east angle is a
handsom e chapel called ‘'S ta p le to n 's C h a n tr y ,’ erected
in the 13th century, w ith a window retainin g some
ancient stained glass and a piscina form ed in a splay
of the east w in d o w ; a deed of E dw ard III. ex ists givin g
perm ission to S ir M iles Stapleton to alienate 25 acres
of land for use of th e p riest of this c h a n try ; the chancel
walls are decorated w ith modern p a in tin g s : there are
two stained windows, and a reredos of coloured m arbles,
w ith a representation of th e Crucifixion in the centre,
w rou ght in m o s a ic : a portion of the rood stairs and the
doorway re m a in s : th ere are 260 sittin gs. T he register
dates from the year 1558. Tho livin g is a vicarage, net
incom e £ 1 7 7 , "with residence and 38 acres of glebe, in
th e g ift of the Archdeacon of B erks, and held since 1909

H ere is a Prim itive M ethodist chapel. T h e only
ch arity is th at of M rs. A nn N oyes, of £ 2 10s. a year,
to be applied to th e purchase of bread, coals or clothes
for the poor, at the discretion of th e vicar and two
trustees appointed by the Parish Council. A piece of
land, near th e S tar inn, 1a. ar. lo p . i n extent, is held
in tru s t by the m inister and churchw ardens, and th e
ren t is applied to the p aym en t of the parish clerk.
There are four alm shouses let at a nom inal ren t to
aged parishioners who are m em bers of th e C h urch of
E ngland, the vicar and churchw ardens being th e
trustees. The principal landowners are the M isses
H edges. The soil and subsoil are chiefly green sand­
stone. T h e ch ief crops are w heat, b arley and roots.
The area is 1,102 acres; rateable value, £ 1,4 0 6 ; the
population in 1911 was 256.
