B E I G H T W E L L is a village and parish, 2 m iles
north-west from W allingford, in the Northern division
of the county, Moreton hundred, W allingford p etty ses­
sional division, union and county court district, rural
deanery of W allingford, archdeaconry of Berks and
diocese of Oxford. The church of S t. A g ath a is a bu ild ­
ing of stone in the E arly E nglish style, consisting of
chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, north porch and
an em battled w estern tower containing 6 bells : in the
church are brasses to John Scoffyld, priest, 1507;
Robert C ourt, auditor to Prince A rthur, 1509, and Jane,
his wife, and to Richard Ham pden, 1512, and Jane, his
w ife ; and there are five stained windows ; the rood
stairs remain on the north s id e : the church was
thoroughly restored in 1858, the tower having been
rebuilt in 1797; in 1884 it was fu rth er restored, at a
cost of ¿ 1 ,1 9 3 , and an organ cham ber was added in
1903 : there are about 350 sittin gs, of which about half
are free. The register dates from the year 1564. The
living is a rectory w ith the ch apelry of Sotw ell annexed,
join t net yearly value ¿ 4 7 2 , w ith 40 acres of glebe
and residence, in th e g ift of th e Bishop of Oxford,
and held since 1908 by the Rev. Henry A rth u r Sealy
M .A. of K eble College, Oxford. By order in Council of
14th May*. 1868, the chapelry of S otw ell was transferred
from St. Leonard’ s, in W allingford, to th is parish,
certain tithes in the parish of H arwell, belonging to
B rightwell, being transferred to St. Leonard’s in ex ­
change. As a result of th is annexation th e ecclesiastical
parish of B rightw ell is not now co-term inous w ith the
civil parish.

Th e Stew art
Memorial H all was erected by public subscription in
1880, as a m em orial to the Rev. Jam es H aldane Stew art,
and is used for parochial purposes. There are bequests

am ounting to ¿ 6 7 17s. a year. In 1882 E dw ard Fairthorne esq. of this parish, gave ¿70 0 G reat Eastern
stock to found two scholarships for the advanced educa­
tion of boys brough t up in the village school.
The
E cclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor.
The princip al landowners are the R ev. John W . Betteridge M .A. and W illiam Robert Cozens and A llen L.
Morphew esqrs. The land, both arable and m eadow,
is very good. The soil is a sandy loam , p artly restin g
on green sand ; subsoil, chiefly clay. Th e ch ief crops
are w heat, barley and turn ips. T h e area is 2,057 acres
of land and 7 of w a t e r ; rateable value, ¿3 -2 0 7 ; the
population in 1911, in clu d in g 55 in W allin gford W o rk ­
house C ottage Homes, was 724 in the c iv il parish and
708 in the ecclesiastical parish.
M ackney, half a m ile south-east, and Slade E n d, half
a m ile east, are ham lets in this parish.

b r i m p t o n is a parish on the borders of H am p­
shire, 6£ m iles east-south-east from N ew bury, 2 m iles
south from the M idgbam station on the G reat W estern
railw ay and io£- south-w est from R eading, in the
Southern division of the county, hundred of Faircross,
p etty sessional division, union and county court dis­
trict of N ew bury, rural deanery of Bradfield, arch ­
deaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. Th e river
Kennet and the Kennet canal are on the north and
the river A uburn passes on th e east, separating the
parish from W asing. The church of St. P eter, erected
in 1869, on k*1® site ° f the form er church, at the sole
cost of the late Jam es B ly th esq. is a b uilding of flint
with stone dressings in the Decorated style and con­
sists of chancel, nave, north annexe, 9outh aisle, south
porch and western tower w ith a lig h t and graceful
spire containing a clock and 4 b ells: m ost of the
windows are stained, one on the north side being a
m em orial to G eorge H enry, E arl of F alm outh , who died
29 A u g u st, 1852; the stained windows on the south
side of the chancel are in m em ory of Edward G olding
B.A. a form er vicar of th is parish, and are dated 1857 :
on the north side of the chancel is one in m em ory of
E llen M ary Caffin, w ife of the Rev. G eorge Benjam in

Caffin M .A. vicar here from 1840: th ere are 250 s it­
tings, 150 bein g free. Th e register dates from the
year 1500. The livin g is a vicarage, n et yea rly value
from the tith e ren t charge ¿ 18 2 , w ith residence, in
the g ift of the Rev. J. H. de C ourcelles M .A. and held
since 1895 by the Rev. C harles Joseph T aylor B .A . of
Corpus C h risti College, C am b ridge. H ere is a B ap tist
chapel, erected in 1843, w ith sittin gs for 140 persons,
and there are a few sm all charities. The late Countess
of F alm outh, who died M ay 1, 1864, b u ilt and endowed
seven alm shouses for th e aged and d estitu te inhabitants
in 1854, under the name of St. Peter’s Alm shouses, and
bequeathed ¿3,000 ¿ 2 f per C ent. Consols for their
support. H ere, situate on the riv er E nborne, is a trout
and gam e farm , under the m anagem ent of the Brim pton T rou t and Gam e Farm s L im ited . W illiam A rth ur
Mount esq. M .P., J .P . and W illiam Jam es K in g esq.
are th e principal landowners. T he soil is peat in the
K en n et valley, w ith loam and g ravel m ixed on the high
la n d s; subsoil, gravel. T he chief crops are w heat,
barley, clover and beans. The area is 1,683 acres of
land and 22 of w ater ; rateable value, ¿2,473 ; th e popu­
lation in 1911 was 430
