designs by S ir A . B lom field. T h ese contain dorm itories, studies, d in in g h all, library, m usic room, & c.,
lig h ted b y e lectric ligh t. T h e san itary arrangem ents are o f the m ost m odern type.
T h e teach in g b u ild in g s are separate, and in clude b ig sch ool, ch ap el, class room s, laboratory and a
p la yin g ground (not grass).
T h e p la yin g fields ad join the school house and cover about 1 1 acres ; there is
also direct access to the R iv er C h erw ell. T h e boys p lay crick et in th esn m m er, fo o tb all in the w inter, and (when
they have passed the sw im m in g test) row in the E aster teim .s H o c k ey is the c h ie f gam e in the p layin g ground
d urin g the E aster and W in ter term s, in the in tervals between sch ool hours.
SCH EM E OF W OR K. T h e w ork of the sch ool, com p risin g C la ssics, M athem atics, N atural S cien ce and
M odern Languages, is arranged m ainly w ith the idea o f p reparin g boys for the U n iv ersity (forty Sch olarsh ip s
and E x h ib itio n s h avin g been obtain ed in the years 1898-1914), hut there is also a specialists' class for boys
w ish in g to enter for W o o lw ic h , Sandhurst, or the R o y a l N avy. T h ere is no extra fee for this class.
CH O R AL S C H O LA R S H IP S . - S ix t e e n boys, elected to sin g in M agd alen C o lle g e C h o ir, are m ain tain ed
and edu cated as boarders at the sch ool. T h ere are also four E x-C h o rister E xh ib ition s to en able deservin g
boys to rem ain at the school after le av in g the ch oir, and eigh t (tw o each year) E x h ib itio n s fo r N o n -C h o risters
in classics, m athem atics or science.
