A L D E R , M A S T O N is a pleasant village and parish on
the Hants b order w ith station i f m iles from the village,
on the H ungerford and1 Devizes branch of the G reat
W estern railw ay, 46 m iles by rail and 49 by road from
London, 10 south-w est from Reading, 9 south-east from
N ewbury, in the Southern division of the county, h un ­
dred of Theale, Reading p etty sessional division, union
of Bradfield, cou n ty court d istrict of N ew bury, ru ra l
deanery of Bradfield, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese
of O x fo rd ; in the D om esday th is place is given as
JEldremanestone ”
and
“ H eldrem anestune.”
The
church of S t. M ary, anciently b elon ging to the Bene­
dictine priory of SS. M ary and John the B ap tist, at
West Sherborne, H ants, is an ancient stru ctu re of flint
and rubble, standing in the p ark of A lderm aston C ourt,
and consists of chancel, nave, south chapel and a western tower, w ith spire, containing 8 bells and a c lo c k ;
the east window of the chancel is E a rly E n glish , consisting of three lancets under one a rc h ; m ost of the
other windows are D ecorated, and several new stained
windows have been a d d ed ; in the south chapel is a
Decorated piscina, a brass to W illiam F orster esq. high
sheriff of B erks, died in 1574, also several m u ral
paintings, discovered in 1896; in the windows on the
north side of the chancel are two panels of glass of the
13th century, rep resen tin g the Annunciation ; the tower
is of the Decorative period, w ith a Norm an doorway
built; in at the west e n d ; the p u lp it is of finely carved
o a k ; under the arch of the south tran sep t is an altar
tomb of alabaster, w ith recum ben t effigies, to S ir
George F orster K .B . sheriff of B erks, who died 7th
December, 1533, and his w ife Elizabeth, gran d-daughter
and heiress of S ir Thom as De la M ere kt. who died in
1526; around the sides, under canopies, w ere eleven
small m ale figures in arm our and eigh t fem ales in
angular head dresses, b ut one of each has d isap p ea red ;
at the west end of the tom b are th e kneeling figures
of his son and heir, afterw ards S ir H um phrey Forster
bart. and his w ife, a daughter of Lord Sandys, of The
Vine, lord high trea su rer to K in g H enry V I I I . ; there
are also m onum ents to Ralph Congreve esq. and a
helm et; in 1896 the church was thoroughly restored,
new roofed, and reseated a t the sole expense of C. E.
Keyser e s q .: there are 250 sittin g s, 125 being free.
The register dates from the year 1558. Th e livin g is
an unendowed vicarage, net yearly incom e £ 300, w ith ­
out residence, in the g ift of Charles E. K eyser esq. and
held since 1888 by the Rev. Faulknor Russell Horwood

charities for church purposes am ount to ¿ 7 17s. 6d.

and flows into a series of tanks for the purpose of
softening i t ; it is then pum ped in to a la rg e reservoir
situate on the top of the A rbour H ill, whence it flows
; by gravitation in to every house and cottage in the
; v illa g e ; it is estim ated th at th e supply could am ount
1 to 100,000 gallons per day. N ear the villag e is A ld e r­

in 1636, and subsequen tly the residen ce of the C on­
greves ; th e ch im n ey stacks, which belong to a very
early period, also a b eau tifu lly carved oak staircase,
were taken from the old m ansion and placed in the
new ; since 1894 th e house, which stands on an em in ­
ence in a park of 1,000 acres of finely varied scenery,
with groves of oak, haw thorn and yew , has been con­
siderably enlarged, and is now the seat of C harles
E dw ard K eyser esq. M .A ., F .S .A ., D .L ., J .P ., C .C . the
lord of the manor and p rin cipal landowner. The soil is
gravel. Th e chief crops are wheat and barley. The
area is 3,693 acres of land and 49 of w a te r ; rateable
value, ¿ 4 ,3 2 8 ; the population in 1911 was 559.
