on t h e o p p o site sid e o f th e s tr e e t, so m ew h at higher up, ad­
jo in in g th e rem a in s of S t. M a r y ’ s C o lle g e, and was erected
in 1 7 8 1 : h e re J o h n W e sle y p re a ch e d on various occasions,

T h e C o n g re g a tio n a l c h a p e l, G e o rg e stre e t, was erected
in 1832, fro m p lan s b y M r. G re e n s h ie ld s ; it has a front
e lev atio n of sto n e, d e sig n e d to im ita te th e Early English
sty le , and w as c o n sid e ra b ly im p ro v e d in 1866 by the ad­
dition of p o rch es and v a rio u s in te rio r alterations, under
th e d irectio n of M r. F . C o d d , of O x fo r d ; in 1883 the
ch a p el w as a g a in im p ro v e d , u n d e r th e direction of Mr. F.
A lb u ry : a n ew o rg a n w as p ro v id e d in 18 77: beneath the
c h u rc h a r e sp a cio u s sch o o lro o m s.
T h e C o n g re g a tio n a l ch a p e l, C o w le y road, is a Gothic
b u ild in g of b ric k and sto n e, ere cte d in 1880, from designs
b y J . S u lm a n , of F u m iv a l’s In n , L o n d o n :th e total cost,in­
clu siv e o f s ite , w a s ¿ 6 ,0 0 0 , and it w ill seat 750 persons.
T h e B a p tis t ch a p el in th e N e w road , fiex t the church­
y a r d of S t . P e t e r le B a ile y , w as firs t b u ilt in 1720, re­
b u ilt in 1780, e n la rg e d in 1798 and 1819, and greatly im­
p ro v ed 'by t h e co n s tru ctio n of a n ew and more lofty roo
in 18 64 : in fro n t is a b u ria l g ro u n d , w hich in 1897-8 Fas
p ro v id ed w ith a n e w fe n c in g of sto n e and ironwork nes
