th ro u g h o u t t h e U n iv e r s ity . T h e w estern ante-cliapel
fo rm s a tra n se p t s im ila r to those of th e chapels at MerÂ
to n , N e w , M a g d a le n , A ll S o u ls and W adh am , though on
a m u c h sm a lle r sc a le . T h e o rig in a l Jacobean stalls and
panelled c e ilin g re m a in ; b u t th e screen is a later work
d a tin g , p ro b a b ly , fro m th e tim e of C h a rle s II. together
w ith th e c a rv e d co m m u n io n r a il of ce d a r wood and the
b la ck and w h ite m a rb le p a v e m e n t. In 1884 the chapel

end of th e se co n d q u a d r a n g le is th e lib ra ry , built by
W y a t t in 1788 and one of th e b e s t ex am p les of the Ionic
o rd e r in O x f o r d : u n d e r th e lib r a r y is th e common room,
co n ta in in g a v a lu a b le c o lle c tio n of p o rtra its, including
one of th e R ig h t H o n . C . J. R h o d es P .C ., D .C.L. and
a n o th e r of th e R ig h t H on. V is c o u n t B ry ce D .C .L.: on
13 D ec. 1800, a fire b ro k e o u t in t h e college, but was
s p e e d ily ch eck ed : on th e n ig h t of th e 24 A pril, 1801, a
