s u b u rb o f O x fo rd a d jo in in g G ra n d p o n t and lying between
th e A b in g d o n ro a d on th e e a st a n d th e G reat Western
r a ilw a y on th e w e s t, in th e p a ris h o f S o u th Hinksey, and
r u r a l d e a n e ry o f O x fo rd , b u t in th e archdeacon ry of Berks'
in 1889 it w as in clu d e d in t h e co u n ty bo ro ugh of Oxford',
and b y A r t. I V . of th e O ity o f O x fo rd Order, i88q, it
w as tra n s fe r r e d fro m B e rk s to t h e co u n ty of Oxford.
T h e c h u r c h of S t. J o h n th e E v a n g e lis t, erected in 1900m
p lace of a fo im e r s m a ll e d ifice b u ilt in 1870, is a building
of b r ic k , w ith sto n e d re s s in g s , in th e Perpendicular style,
fro m d e sig n s b y M essrs . B u c k n a ll and C om per, architects,
of L o n d o n : a t p r e s e n t o n ly th e w e ste rn half of the
c h u r c h h a s bee n b u ilt , a t a c o s t of over ¿6,000, and
a ffo rd s 400 s ittin g s . T h e d is t r ic t is attached to the
