from H ighw orth and 12 from Swindon, in the Northern
division of the county, hundred of G anfield, p etty
sessional division, union and cou n ty court d istrict of
Faringdon, ru ra l deanery of th e V ale of W h ite Horse,
archdeaconry of B erks and diocese of Oxford. The
ch u rch of S t. F a ith , reb u ilt in 1652 and incorporating
portions of an ancient stru ctu re of Norm an date, con­
s ists of chancel, nave, south porch, v estry and an
em battled western tow er w ith spire and containing 4
b e lls : the reredos is of oak, handsom ely c a rv e d : the
vestry was added in 1 9 1 3 : in the south w all of the
chancel is a p iscin a and a table inscribed to John
P acker, ob. 1682 : on the north side is a fine m onum ent
to R obert Packer, d. 4 th A p ril, 1 7 3 1 , and M aria, his
w ife : in the nave is a brass to M ary K napp, ob. 23 rd
Sept. 1 6 2 1 , and a splendid m onum ent of m arble w ith
bust, to S ir E d w ard Hannes k t. physician to Queen
A n n e : another, w ith arm s, is inscribed to W illiam
Flow er, 2 nd V iscou n t A shbrook, who died at th e Manor
H ouse 30 th A u gu st, 1 7 8 0 ; and to W illiam 3 rd V iscount,
who died 6 th January, 18 0 2 : there are six stained
windows, in clu d in g one presented in 1890 by Thom as

in 1 8 8 9 : in the churchyard are m em orials to Dorothy
Clayton, ob. 3 rd O ctober, 1658 ; A lice, w ife of Richard

to Susan Du Pré, d. A p ril 23 rd, 1 8 7 4 : a new organ was
provided in 1 9 1 2 : there are 150 sittin g s. The register
dates from th e year 15 5 8 . The livin g is a rectory, net
yearly value £ 306 , in clu d in g 24 acres of glebe, w ith
residence, in the g ift of S ir A lexander Henderson h art.
M .P., J.P . and held since 1909 by the Rev. H erbert
W illiam D oudney M .A . of Corpus C h risti College,
C am bridge. Th ere is a sm all C ongregational chapel in
the v illag e, erected in 1834 . K item ore, a handsome
m ansion in the French G oth ic style, situated between
Faringdon and S hellingford, and com m anding a fine
view of W hite Horse H ill and scenery in the v icin ity, is
the property and residence of L t.-C ol. H arold G . H ender­
son M .P ., J.P . who is lord of the m anor and sole lan d­
owner. The soil is sandy loam , stone brash and clay ;
subsoil, clay, sand and gravel. T h e crops are the usual
cereals.

S H I N F I E L D is a villag e and parish, 4 m iles south
from R eading, in the Southern division of the county,
p artly in the hundred, of Theale and p artly in the
hundred of C harlton , union of W okingham , p etty
sessional division and county cou rt d istrict of Reading,
ru ral deanery of Reading, archdeaconry of Berks and
diocese of Oxford. T h e riv er Loddon flows on the
south-east. The church of St. M ary is an ancient
edifice of flint and brick, in th e E a rly E n g lish style,
consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and
low em battled w estern tower containing 6 b e lls : in
the church are several m o n u m e n ts: the seats are of
oak and the pulpit of carved o a k : the east window is
stain ed : the church was com pletely restored in 18 57 ,
a t a cost of £ 1 , 6 0 0 : there are 360 sittin gs.
The
reg ister dates from the year 1649 . Th e livin g is a
-vicarage, net income £ 200 . w ith 26 acres of glebe, and
residence, in the g ift of the Dean and C hapter of H ere­
ford, and held since 1908 by th e Rev. H erbert Llw elyn
R ice M .A. of Q ueens’ C ollege, C am bridge. There is a
v illage hall, the p roperty of Robert C u rtis esq. and
erected in 1913 to seat 400 persons. The charities
am ount to about £ 8 yea rly and are for cloth in g and
coal. The Manor House is the residence of Alexander
B. Cobham esq. who is lord of th e m anor, and w ith
Jam es H erbert Benyon esq. L .L . is the p rin cipal lan d­
owner. The soil is gravel and c la y ; subsoil, gravel.
The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. T h e entire
area is 4,292 acres of land and 21 of w a te r; rateable
value, in clu d in g G razeley and p art of Spencer’s Wood,
