B R A D F I E L D is a scattered village, parish and head
of a union, 8 m iles west from B eading, 3 north-w est
from Theale, and 3 ! south-west from Pangbourne ra ilÂ
way station, in the Southern division of the county,
hundred of Theale, p etty sessional division and county
court d istrict of B eading, rural deanery of Bradfield,
archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford ; the village
is situated in a valley, on a stream called the Kim ber,
which rises in th is parish. The v illag e is supplied with
water pum ped from St. A ndrew âs w ell. The church of
St. Andrew, w ith the exception of the tow er and p art of
the north aisle, reb u ilt b y the Bev. Thom as Stevens,
rector, 1843-82, was re-consecrated in 1848, after enÂ
largem ent, and is an edifice of flint w ith stone dressÂ
ings in the E a rly E n glish style, consisting of chancel,
nave, aisles, transept, north porch and an em battled
western tower of red brick and flint, containing 6 bells ;
the windows are stained, and there are 500 sittings.
The register dates, w ith some interruptions, from 1539.
The livin g is a rectory, net yearly value ,¿735, in cludÂ
ing 72 acres of glebe, with residence, in the g ift of
H erbert W atney esq. M.D. and held since 1909 by the
Bev. Biqhard Norm an H urt, who is also chaplain of
Bradfield union. H oly T rin ity chapel of ease, at Buckhold, about 2 m iles north of the village, was b u ilt in
1836, and is an edifice of stone, consisting of nave on ly;
SS. Sim on and Judeâs chapel of ease, about a m ile from
che church, b uilt in 1835, is a stru ctu re of flint, also of
nave only, and is intended for the use of the inm ates of
the Union workhouse. There is also a sm all P rim itive
Methodist chapel. The charities consist of the interest
¿ 3° ° £ 2i Per C ent. Consols, le ft by J. B uller, of
Privy G ard en s; W ilsonâs £100 lik e C on sols; seven acres
of land, now let in allotm ents, and some sm aller
am ounts le ft by other persons for the benefit of the
poor. The charities are now adm inistered, under a
scheme sanctioned by the C h arity C om m issioners, by
trustees, some of whom are elected annually by the
Parish Council, the rem ainder being perm anent. B uckhold, the seat of H erbert W atney esq. M .A ., M .D.,
F .R .C .P . is a m ansion of red brick in the E arly G othic
style, erected from designs bv A lfred W aterhouse B .A .
architect, and is situated about 2 m iles north of the
village, in extensive and undulating grounds. Bradfield
Hall, the seat of A rth u r B adford esq. J.P . is a subÂ
stantial b uilding of red brick about one m ile and a half
west of the village. H erbert W atney esq. M .A ., M .D .,
F .B .C .P . who is lord of th e rep uted m anor, Jam es
H erbert Benyon esq. Lord L ieu t, and J.P . M rs. Stevens
and A rth u r Badford esq. J.P . are the principal lan dÂ
owners. The soil is generally g ra velly ; subsoil, for the
most p art, chalk. The chief crops are w heat, barley,
oats and roots. The area is 4,346 acres of land and 13
of w a te r; rateable value, ¿ 8 ,5 7 2 ; the population in
1911 was t ,6 o6, in clu d in g 14 officers and 120 inm ates
in the workhouse.

Schools.
The College of St. Andrew, near the parish church, was
founded by the Rev. Thom as Stevens M .A. in 1850,
for the education of the sons of gentlem en, & enÂ
dowed in 1859 for 153 commoners & 16 Founderâs
b .y s ; in 1862 it was incorporated by Royal C h arter &
by alteration of the statutes the warden is now
authorized to adm it an unlim ited num ber of comÂ
moners, & as vacancies occur there is a yearly com Â
p etitive election of one or more boys under the age
of fifteen to the foundation of the sch o o l; by the
statutes it is provided that â the Founderâ s hoys shall
be either fatherless or the sons of poor gentlem an or
clergym en, & th ey shall be lodged, boarded & inÂ
structed gratu itou sly & upon term s of eq uality in all
respects with the com m oners.â A ttach ed to the school
is the Stevens scholarship of ¿ 3 0 , tenable for three
years a t Oxford or C am bridge, & various prizes of ¿ 5
6 lesser am o u n ts; in 1886 a steam laundrv was built,
b u t in 1906 converted into a shooting galle ry: there
are also w aterw orks, p rovidin g a p len tifu l supply of
good w a te r; in 1890 a new sanatorium was erected
200 yards from the college, w ith four large wards for
ordinary infectious cases & a com pletely isolated fpver
w a r d : the college chapel, b u ilt by p ublic subscripÂ
tions, & opened in 1892, has since been enlarged &
now holds 350 boys. Th ere is also a range of engineerÂ
ing workshops for the use of boys intended to enter
