the school buildings, designed by the late G. E. Street
sq. R.A. & erected at a cost of upwards of ¿28,000,
comprise a large school room, chapel, class rooms,
dining hall, masters’rooms, matron’s department, sick
room, bath room & dormitories, & will hold about 180
boys: there is a preparatory department for boys
of 8-10; also a gymnasium, a detached hospital,
fives court, workshop with lathes & a carpenter’s shop,
& immediately adjoining is a cricket field of five and a
half acres in extent: the premises were enlarged in
1864 & 1869 & the chapel was built in 1871: the
property was conveyed in 1896 by the Rev. P R
Egerton, the founder, to the Provost & Fellows of St.
Nicholas’College, Lancing, with a view to securing it
for its original object, though at present the school is
without endowment, beyond the value of the property
itself; there are about 80 boys, nearly all boarders.
