BERK SHIRE.

W I N K F I E L D is one of the la rg est parishes in the
cou nty, consisting of Cranbourne, W ink field Row, Ascot
Side, and a portion of B rackn ell and Brayw ood, being
m ore than 8 mil.es a c ro ss ; it contains m an y gen tle­
m en's seats, in consequence of the beauty of its scenery
and its v icin ity to W in d so r; from the church Windsor
is 6 m iles south-w est and 4 m iles north-w est is Ascot
station on the London and South -W estern railw ay, in
the E astern division of the county, hundred of Ripplesm ere, p etty sessional division of M aidenhead, union of
E astham pstead, county cou rt d istrict of W indsor, ru ral
deanery of M aidenhead, archdeaconry of B erks and dio­
cese of Oxford. T n e ch urch of S t. M ary is a plain
building of stone and conglom erate, faced w ith flint, in
the D ecorated style, and consists of chancel, nave,
south porch, organ cham ber, side chapel and vestries,
and an em battled w estern tower containing 6 bells and
a c lo c k : the nave is divided in the centre by solid
oak p illars, placed there in the reign of Queen E liz a ­
beth, on one of which appears a date w ith a crowned
rose and her in it ia ls ; one of th ese decayed and was
replaced by Queen V ictoria w ith oak from W indsor
F orest, and a half pillar of oak at the w est end was re ­
placed by K in g E dw ard V II. in 1909 : the carved stone
reredos represents the Lord's Supper, and several of the
windows are stained : there are m onum ents to the Met­
calfe and Blane fam ilies, to Anne (Tow ry), w ife of Edward,
1st Baron Ellenborough and Lord C hief Justice of the
Bang's B en ch ; she died 16th A u g u st, 1843; to A dm iral
S ir H enrv K i n g ; and A d m iral the Hon. S ir Henry
K eppel G .C .B ., O.M. d. 17 Jan. 1904; there is also a
brass, w ith an effigy to Thom as M ontague, yeom an of
the gu ard, ob. 1630, representing him in the a ct of dis­
trib u tin g b read : the ch urch was restored in 1858, 1888
an d 18 9 1, at a cost of over £2,000, and affords 400
s itt in g s , 200 bein g free. Th e reg ister now in existence
d a te s from 1720 only. T he liv in g is a vicarage, net
yearly value £248, w ith 8 acres of glebe and residence,
in th e g ift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1909
by the Rev. H erbert M artin M aynard M .A. of Corpus
C h risti College, C am bridge. A t W inkfield Row is St.
Mary the L ess, a chapel of ease, a building of iron,
erected in 1901. There is an endowment of £380 a
year, given in 1710 by Richard, 1st E arl of Ranelagh.
augm ented in 1715 w ith £200 given by Thom as Maule
esq. and in 1780 w ith £289 os. 2d. the g ift of Thom as
H atch : a scheme was form ed in 1878 for the distrib u­
tio n of these benefactions between th e p arish of W in k ­
field and the ecclesiastical parishes of Cranbourne, A scot
Heath and B racknell, so as to provide scholarships at
secondary schools and continuation classes &c. for these
p arish es; this was realised in 1908 and expended in the
erection of th e Ranelagh Secondary Schools at Bracknell.
There are also parochial charities am ounting in the
aggregate to about £300 p e r annum , of w hich the
m ost im portant is one for the m aintenance of eigh t
alm swom en in the alm shouses and a charitable fund

called “ Locke and Poyn ter’s ” w hich provides for the
apprenticing of two or three children yearly. Th e fuel
allotm ent has been sold and the proceeds in v e s te d ; these
produce £140 yearly, which sum is adm inistered by a
separate body of trustees, who assist th e poor to obtain
coal. A scot Place, the seat of Sam uel G. A sh er esq.
D.L. is a m ansion in a well-wooded park of 360 acres,
w ith tastefu lly laid-out pleasure grounds and a fine sheet
of w ater. Foliejon Park, the seat of G ilb ert Gordon
Blane esq. J .P . is situated on an em inence in an u n ­
d u latin g park, extending over an area of 550 acres.

T h e soil is m ixed, strong clay, loam and gravel, w ith a
la rg e portion of h e a t h ; subsoil, clay, gravel, flint and
sand. T he ch ief crops are w heat, oats and peas. The
area is 10,218 acres of land and 60 of w a te r; rateable
value, £ 2 9 ,123 ; the population in 1911 was 4,191, of
which 949 are attached to the m other ch urch , the
rem ainder being ecclesiastical parishes of A scot, B rack ­
nell, Braywood, C ranbourne and Sunninghill.
W IN K F IE L D RO W , a pleasant ham let of W inkfield,
is
m iles south from W inkfield church and 3 north
from A scot T a il w a y station.
