I N K P E N is a parish on the borders of W iltsh ire, 4 1 the boundary between th is county and H am pshire.
m iles south-east-by-south from H ungerford and 3 south W alb ury Cam p, the h igh est point of w h ich is ju s t
from K in tb u ry station on th e R eading and H ungerford outside the parish boundary of Inkpen, is the h igh est
branch of the G reat W estern railw ay, in the Southern point of the chalk range in the south of E n glan d, being
division of the county, hundred of K in tbu ry-E agle, 959 feet h igh . K irb y House, the property and resiÂ
p etty sessional division and cou n ty court d istrict of dence of L ad y Clarke-Jervoise, belonged at one tim e to
H ungerford, H ungerford and R am sb ury union, rural Thom as B rickenden, who was Reader of G rayâ s Inn,
deanery of N ew bu ry, archdeaconry of B erks and dio and Judge of the Lord M ayorâs court, who died in
cese of O xford. The church of S t. M ichael is a small 1664: about 1779 it passed by purchase to the Frankbut ancient stru ctu re of flin t and stone in the E arly land Russells, and subsequently to th e B u tler fam ily.

K E N N I N G T O N is a sm all village, and was form ed
into an ecclesia stical parish 16 Feb. 1866, out of the
parishes of R adley and S u n n in g w ell; i t is separated
from O xfordshire by the river Isis and is on the high
road from O xford to Abingdon, 2 m iles south from
the formeT, 4 north from A bingdon and 2 m iles north
from the R adley station on the B irm in gh am and
O xford branch of th e G reat W estern railw ay, in the
Northern division of th e county, hundred of Horm er,
p etty sessional division, union and cou n ty cou rt disÂ
trict of Abingdon and in the ru ra l deanery of A bin gÂ
don, archdeaconry of B erks and diocese of O x fo rd ; the
Tham e branch of th e G reat W estern railw ay crosses
the riv er here over a bridge of three arches. The
church of S t. S w ith in , b u ilt and consecrated in 1828,
is a sm all edifice of stone in th e Norm an style, conÂ
sistin g of nave and a western bell-cot containing one
bell and has been ren o va ted : there are 80 sittings.
The reg ister dates from th e year 1829. The liv in g is
a vicarage, net yearly value ¿ 17 0 , in the g ift of A ll
Souls College, O xford, and held since 1904 by th e R ev.
C harles Boxali Longland M .A. of W orcester College,
Oxford, who is also vicar of Radley, where he resides.
A new church b urial ground, 1 acre in exten t, the
g ift of E d g ar N orton D isney esq. w as consecrated by
th e Bishop of O xford in 1914. E d gar Norton D isney
esq. is lord of the m anor and chief landowner. E grove
Farm , by L ocal G overnm ent Board O rder 18,177, has
been transferred from Radley. Th e soil is principally
stone brash, restin g on the lim estone. T h e crops are
grain in succession. The area is 430 acres ; the popuÂ
lation in 1901 was 151 and in 1911, 281.
