BERKSHIRE.

D R A Y T O N is a parish situated on the borders of
Oxfordshire and on the road from A bingdon to N ew­
bury, 2$ m iles south-w est-by-south from Abingdon,
miles north from Steventon station on the G reat W estern
railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred
of Ock, p etty sessional division, union and county court
district of Abingdon, rural deanery of Abingdon, arch­
deaconry of B erks and diocese of Oxford. The W ilts
and B erks canal passes through this parish.
The
church of St. Peter is a b uilding of stone, consisting of
chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an em ­
battled western tower containing 8 bells and a c lo c k :
the chancel was erected in 1872, Chiefly at the cost of
the late vicar, and has a stained window representing
The C rucifixion: the south porch, added in 1879, is fu r­
nished w ith gurgoyles of carved stone, and in the p ave­
ment is the following inscription inlaid in lead, “ Keep
thy foot when thou goest to the house of God j ” ; these
improvements were effected under the superintendence
of the late Mr. E. Dolby, architect, of A bingdon : the
font is a plain cylindrical work of Norm an date : in the
north wall of the la d y chapel there is an aum bry, and
in the south w all a credence and p is c in a : there are also
two other piscinae in the church : in d ig g in g a v au lt in
the church in the year 1814 the workm en cam e upon
some elaborate and beautiful old carvin gs in alabaster,
representing The Betrayal, The Scourging, Th e C ru ci­
fixion (now m issing) and The E ntom bm ent of Our
Saviour, The Adoration and The A n n un ciation : there are

dates from 1754, the earlier ones having been destroyed
at the great fire of D rayton in the year 1780.
The

don, by O rder in Council, N ovem ber 4th, 1867; net
yearly value ¿ 13 0 , w ith residence, in the g ift of Lady
W antage, and held since 1908 by the R ev. F rederic John
Chapm an, of S t. Bees. H ere are B ap tist and W esleyan
chapels. T he charities am ount to about £22 yearly,
and there are five cottages for the poor a t a v ery small
rent. Th e Manor House, an an cien t m ansion, is the
residence of Louis G eorge G rev ille esq. Lady W antage
is lady of the m anor. T h e soil is lo am y and c la y ; sub­
soil, g ravel and clay. T he chief crops are w h eat, barley,
beans and turnips. The area is 1,845 acres of land and
6 of w a te r; rateable value, £ 2 ,6 16 ; th e population in
1911 was 513.
