G R E E N , a village situated in a
h ig h ly cultivated and picturesque country on the border
of the G reat B ath road and 3J m iles west from M aiden­
head, was form ed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1894
out of the c iv il parish of W hite W a lth a m : it is in the
E astern division of the county, B eyn h u rst hundred.

T h e church of S t. John the E va n g elist, erected in 1893
from designs by Mr. E. J. Shrew sbury A .R .I.B .A . of
M aidenhead, is a cruciform b uildin g of blue Pennant
stone, w ith Bath stone dressings, consisting of chancel,
nave, transepts, vestries, w est porch and a tu rret con­
tain in g two b e lls ; and was erected and endowed by
Miss Frances E lizabeth E llis, of W hite W altham Place,
in m em ory of her m other, M rs. C atherine E llis, as
appears by the inscription on a brass on the w est w a ll:
the east window is stained, and there are 225 sittings.
T he livin g is a vicarage, n et yearly value ¿ 2 7 7 , with
residence, in the g ift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held
since 1894 by the Rev. Thom as H enry W renford, of St.
Bees. There is a W esleyan chapel, w ith sittin gs for 120

persons. W alter H. C ottingham esq. is the principal
landowner. S ir G. A. C layton -E ast bart. is lord of the
m anor of Ffiennes. The population in 1911 was 350;

E A S T L O C K I N G E is a parish about 2 m iles eastsouth-east from W an tage and 3 south-east from W ant­
age Road station on the m ain line of the G reat W estern
railw ay, which passes through a portion of the parish ;
it is in the Northern division of th e county, hundred,
p ettv sessional division, union and county court district
of W antage, and in the ru ral deanery of W antage, arch­
deaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. Th e church
of A ll Saints is an edifice of stone in m ixed styles, con­

sisting of chancel, nave of seven bays, north aisle, north
and south porches, w ith a fine Norman dooTway and an
em battled western tow er containing 4 bells : th e church
was restored and enlarged in 1886, at a cost of ¿3,000,
by the late Lord W antage, when an organ was pro­
vided : there are 280 sittings. T he reg ister dates from
the year 1546. The livin g is a rectoi'y. net yearly value
