H U R L E Y , ancien tly “ H urstelega,” is a beautiful
village and parish situated in a valley on the bank of
th e riv er Tham es, surrounded by an am p h ith eatre of

north-east from Reading, in the E astern division of

of St. M ary, anciently attached to the priory, is a
stru ctu re of flint and chalk, p artly in the Norm an
s t y le ; it was rededicated about 1086 by O sm und the
Good, Bishop of Sarum and C hancellor of England,
and consists of chancel, nave, and a tu rre t containing
3 b e lls; it was restored in 1852 a t a cost of .¿1,493»
when th e original windows on the north side, form erly
closed, were re-opened, those on th e south side re ­
stored and a vestry a d d e d : the chancel retains a
