ern railw ay, in the Southern division of th e county,

deanery of N ew bury, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese
of Oxford. The church of S t. B arnabas, reb u ilt, w ith
the exception of the tower, in 1842, is a structure of
b rick w ith stone dressings in the D ecorated style, con­
sisting of chancel, nave, n orth porch and a western
em b attled tower, w ith pinnacles and lo fty spire, con­
taining 5 b e lls : th e com m union table is of beautifu lly
carved o a k : th e five-ligh t east stained window was
erected in 1910 at a cost of ¿ 4 0 0 : there are 150 sittin gs.
The register dates from the year 1535. The livin g is a
rectory, net yea rly value ¿430 , includin g 70 acres of
glebe, w ith residence, in the gift of C aptain Henry
L in d sa y Archer-H oublon, and held since 1911 by the

is a village and parish in the Vale of W hite
H orse, 5 m iles ea st from Faringdon and 9 w est from
Abingdon, in the N orthern division of the county, Ganfield hundred, p etty sessional, division, union and county
cou rt d istrict of Faringdon, rural deanery of the Vale of
W hite Horse, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese c f O x­
ford. The church of A ll Saints is a cruciform b uildin g
of stone in the Renaissance style, and consists of chan­
cel. nave, transepts, west porch and a w estern bell
gable containing 2 b e lls : it was reb uilt solely at the
expense of Mr. John Allen Pusey, who died in 1753:
on the south side is a m em orial window to the Hon.
Philip Bouverie Pusey, who d ie 1 14th A p ril, 1828, and
to others of the fa m ily ; and there are^two other stained
windows ; in the north transept is an incised slab to

H enry D oggett and his wife, dated 1480; and in the
south transept there is a fine m arble m onum ent with
p ortrait effigies by Scheem aker to Jane (Bouverie), wife
of John A llen P usey esq. who died in 1742, besides
m em orials to the Dunches of L ittle W ittenham and
P u s e y : in the churchyard is a tomb bearing an in­
scribed brass to Richard Pusey or Pesey, ob. 2nd A ugust.
1655, and M aria his widow, ob. 30th June, 1656; and
one to the Thomas fam ily of W an tage: on the exterior
wall of the chancel is a quaint inscription to W illiam
W hite, ob. 10th May, 1655, and on the floor of the
chancel an inscription to another W illiam W hite “ who
began to live that is died,” M ay 31st, 1678 : there are
90 sittin gs, 50 being free. The register dates from the
