B A S I L D O N is a villag e and parish on the riv er by th e V icar of Basildon on Sun days at 6 p.m . H ere is
T h am es, w hich is here crossed by a bridge of four a C ongregational chapel, founded in 1797, seatin g 140
arches, on the line of the G reat W estern railw ay, and persons.
The poor’s land of 8 acres produces £ 1 6
erected a t a cost of £25,000 ; the villag e is 2 m iles south ­ yearly. D uring the progress of
excavations for the
ea st from Pangbourne station on th e G re a t W estern construction of the G reat W estern railw ay a beautiful
railw ay, and 8 north-w est from Reading, in the Southern tessellated Roman pavem en t was discovered a few
division of the county, hundred of M oreton, union of inches below the surface, and on an elevated spot,
Bradfield, p etty sessional division and county cou rt not far from the T h am es, coins of Vespasian, in good
d is trict of R eading, ru ra l deanery of W allingford, a rc h ­ preservation, dom estic utensils and several hum an
deaconry of B erks and diocese of Oxford. The church skeletons, w ith a Rom an sword lyin g near them , w ere
of S t. B artholom ew, supposed to have been erected in found. The G rotto, a mansion b eau tifu lly situated
the reign of Edward II. (1307-27), is a b u ild in g of flint on a wooded slope, on th e south bank of the riv er, is
w ith stone dressings, consisting of chancel, nave, south the seat of G ilb ert J. C. H arter esq. N ear th e villag e
porch and a western tower of brick, w ith pinnacles, and is Basildon Park, form erly the seat of S ir F ran cis Sykes
