Sandhurst, was constituted a separate ecclesiastical
parish J u ly 10th, 1874, and was constituted a civil parish
June 23rd, 1894; it is 4 m iles south-east from W okin gÂ
ham , 36 from London and 11 from Reading, the village
being 1 m ile from the W ellington C ollege station of the
R eading and R eigate branch of th e S outh E astern and
C hatham railw ay, in the E astern division of th e county,
p etty sessional division of W okingham , hundred of
Sonning, union of Eastham pstead, county court d istrict
of Reading, ru ra l deanery of Sonning, archdeaconry of
B erks and diocese of Oxford. T h e ch u rch of S t. John
the Baptist, b u ilt and consecrated in 1873, is an edifice
of red b rick in the G othic style, consisting of chancel,
nave, aisles, and >a b e ll-c o t; the chancel was added in
1888-9, at a cost of ¿2,00 0: there are 400 sittin gs. The
register dates from the year 1873. T he livin g is a v ic a rÂ
age, net yearly value ¿262, w ith residence, in the gift
of the Bishop of O xford, and held since 1894 by the
Rev. G eorge F rederick C oleridge M .A. of K eble College,
Oxford, and rural dean of Sonning. Th e vicarage house
was b u ilt in 1877. Here is a W esleyan chapel. The
area is 2,262 acres of land and 8 of w ater ; assessable
value, ¿17.26 5 ; the population in 1911 w as 3.936, in Â
clu ding 187 officials and th eir fam ilies and 844 inm ates
