O A R E (or O ure) is a ch apelry of C hieveley, 2^ m iles
from C hieveley and 5 north from N ew bury. Th e chapel
of S t. Bartholom ew is a plain edifice of stone in the
Perpendicular style, con sistin g of chancel, nave, south
porch and a western tu rre t of stone containing one b e ll:
there is a stained window on th e south side, erected to
the m em ory of four little children of the Rev. John
E llill Robinson M .A. vicar of C h ieveley 1837-82: the
church was thoroughly restored and reseated by the
Rev. J. E. Robinson in 1852, and affords 60 sittin gs. The
churchyard has fine spreading yew trees, and m em orials
to the B u tt, T aylor. W allins and T u ck ey fam ilies.
T here is also a sm all b urial ground, long since disused,
belonging to the S ociety of Friends. W illiam A rth u r

west from N ew bury. Th e church of St. Jam es, seated on
an em inence, is an edifice of flint w ith stone dressings,
in the E a rly E nglish style, consisting of chancel, nave,
aisles, south porch and an em battled western tow er of
brick containing 2 b e lls : in the ch urch is a m onum ent
•f m arble, w ith arm s, to Ph ilip W eston esq. ob. June
9. 1729, and on the floor are m em orials to the South by,

C H I L D R E Y is a parish about 2^ m iles west from
W antage and 2% south-w est from th e Challow station on
the G reat W estern railw ay, in the N orthern division of
the county, hundred, p e tty sessional division, union and
county co u rt d istrict of W antage and in the rural
deanery of W antage, archdeaconry of B erks and diocese
of Oxford. The Berks and W ilts canal separates this
parish from W est Challow : the nam e is derived from
its situation at the source of the C illareth e brook, b ut
there seem s to be no m ention of it, as a village, in the
old chronicles. The ch u rch of S t. M ary is an ancient
and h igh ly in terestin g cruciform stru ctu re in m ixed
styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts and an

Head, Spear and Prio r fa m ilie s : the east window is
s ta in e d : the church was com pletely restored and re ­
seated and enlarged by the addition of aisles in 1854,
and has now 200 sittin gs, all being free. W interbourne
Manor is now (X915) unoccupied. Th e principal lan d­
owners are th e trustees of the late S ir M atthew B aillie
Begbie kt. M .A . C hief Justice of B ritish C olu m bia (d.
1894), Mrs. B est and Mr. C harles F. T h atcher. T he
area is 2,112 a c re s; rateable value, £ 1 ,8 1 1 ; the popu­
lation in 1911 was 227.

ing 6 bells and a sm all sanctus bell called “ tin g -ta n g ”
and a c lo c k : the chancel, nave and north tran sep t were
probably b u ilt by the Frethornes and the tower and
south transept added by the Fetyplaces, whose arm s
appear over the w est window : the chancel has a fine
Perpendicular east window’, a double piscina, E arly E n g ­
lish sedilia and a canopied E aster sepulchre ; the chancel
is as wide as the nave, and w ith o u t chancel a r c h ; part
of the rood-loft rem ains, and there are hagioscopes for
each tra n s e p t: the north tran sep t, or S t. M ary’s chapel,
belonging to th e m anor of F rethornes, had a chantry
founded in the 14th c e n t u r y ; in the east w all is a
