the chancel being alm ost entirely r e b u ilt ; but the
b uilding as it now exists con stitutes only the choir of
the church projected by Henry V I. and was com pleted in
1476 by W illiam of W aynflete, the first bead m aster, and
afterw ards Bishop of W in ch ester; it is 175 feet in
length, 90 feet high and 40 feet wide, and consists of
ante-chapel, chapel and north porch, w ith a sm all vestry
adjoining, th e whole con stitu tin g a fine specim en of
Perpendicular w o rk ; there are tu rrets at the angles
w ith curious added cupolas and the b uilding is su rÂ
rounded b y a pierced parapet w ith p in n acles; it was
considerably altered in 1759 at a cost of £ 1,9 0 0 ; in
1769 the ante-chapel was repaired and the whole interior
was restored in 1847-9 under the direction of M r. Deeson ;
in the course of the work, th e walls of the five western
bays on both sides of the choir were found to be covered
w ith p aintin gs executed between 1479 and 1487 and in Â
tended to exem plify the gracious protection afforded by
the Blessed Virgin, the patroness of the college, to her
votaries in all ages and c o u n trie s ; the upper portion of
rhese, declared by the la te G. E. S tre e t esq. R .A . to be
the finest frescoes y e t discovered in England, was alm ost
wholly destroyed and the rem ainder is now hidden behind
the stalls. The chapel was fu rth er restored at a later
d a te under the direction of H. W oodyer e s q .; all the
windows are s ta in e d ; t h e ' great east window was preÂ
sented by the boys in 1847 at a cost of £2,000; two
others in the ante-chapel are m em orials to Etonians who
fell in the C rim ean W ar and ix m em orial windows were
contributed b y the B ev. John W ilder M .A. fellow of
E ton College, who also caused the reredos and the whole
east end to be d eco rated ; the two easternm ost windows
on either side of the choir were contributed by the assistÂ
ant m asters and M r. W . A. C a rte r; another window was
given by the Ven. E dw ard Balston D.D. head m aster
1862-8, and Mrs. B alsto n ; at the w est end of the chapel
is a m em orial screen of Caen stone, designed b y th e late
G . E. Street esq. R .A . richly carved w ith coats of arms
and adorned w ith m em orial brasses to those officers who
were killed during th e A fghan and South African cam Â
paigns, and unveiled on Commemoration Day (June 5,
1882) by His la te M ajesty K in g E dw . V II. then Prince
of W ales. In Jan. 1895, an inscribed brass was placed
near th e organ screen by his brother officers to Lieut.

Hervey, who fell 23 Feb. 1894, at M edina C reek, W est
Africa, d urin g the G am bia E xp ed itio n ; there are also
brasses to S ir Joseph Barnby, precentor of E ton College,
1875-92, d. 1896; to H arry M artin Sandbach, who died
in A frica, and to L ieu t. G renfell, 21st Lan cers, who fell
m the cavalry charge at Om durm an in 1898. The colours
of the 14th (Prin ce of W alesâ Own) regim ent w ere deÂ
posited here in X877. In the ante-chapel are m arble
statues of K in g H enry VI. by Bacon, and Provost Goodall,
b y W e e k e s ; th at of Provost Thom as M urray is in the
c h ap el; there is also a black m arble slab w ith singular
inscription to Sir H enry W otton, am bassador to Venice
and provost of Eton (1639)» a m em orial to Sir H enry
S avile, provost, and warden of M erton College, Oxford,
ob. 19 F ebruary, 1622, and a cenotaph w ith recum bent
m arble figure of the Rev. E dw ard Craven H awtrey, proÂ
vost from 1853, who died Jan u ary 27, 1862; in 1893
a m onum ent was erected by old Etonians to the late
Ven. Archdeacon Balston D.D. who died in 1891, conÂ
s istin g of a recum bent m arble effigy on an altar tomb
of stone and alabaster.
The ante-chapel and other
parts of the buildin g contain a large num ber of brasses
of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, in cludin g those
of Dr. Thom as B arker, elected provost in 1489; H enry
Bost, provost 1503; Roger Lupton, provost 1536, and
founder of S edburgh school, N . WT. Y o r k s ; and Richard,
Lord G rey, 15 2 1; there is also a th ree-quarter effigy of
Thom as E dgcom b, fellow and vice-provost of Eton,
1545, in academ ical dress w ith inscription in Latin
v e r s e : the figure is palim psest, the reverse showing
portions of an earlier inscription : the brass, w ith effigy
and inscription to E lizabeth, wife of Robert Stokys, 1560,
is also, as regards the inscription, a palim psest, the
reverse h avin g an inscription to W alter H augh, 1505,
and his w ives, M argaret and I s a b e l; in Novem ber,
1894, a m em orial tab le t was erected on the w all of the
porch to the south-w est door of th e ante-chapel to the Rt.
Rev. H enry John C h itty H arper D.D. Bishop of C h ristÂ
ch u rch , N ew Zealand, who died at C h ristch u rch on
Dec. 28, 1893 ; a sm all statue of W illiam of W aynflete.
placed in a niche on the outside of the west w all, and
erected b y Sussex Etonians, was unveiled June 5, 1893 :
the chapel w ill seat about 700. In 1891 a new suppleÂ
m entary chapel was erected in K eateâs lane ; it is of
stone in the Perpendicular style, and consists of an em Â
b attled nave or choir w ith pinnacles and a small
octagonal tu rre t at each angle, and w ill seat 450.
Eton M ontem .â This ancient and singular annual cereÂ
m ony was abolished in 1847; the 4th of June, George

Etonians and is m arked bv a procession of boats to
S u rley.
