The Poor L aw In stitu tion , in the Oxford road, was
occupied in June, 1867: it is of local red brick, in the
E lizabethan style, & was erected at a total cost of
about ¿ 8 ,10 0 : in 1892 considerable additions were
begun, & com pleted in 1894, consisting of a new
central block & infirm ary, casual & receivin g wards
& a porter’s lo d g e ; the b u ild in g is heated by steam
p ip e s ; these additions have been carried out at a
cost of about ¿27,0 00 : fu rth er alterations were carried
out in 1911, consistin g of a new aged & infirm block
& p hthisical q uarters, operatin g room, enlarged nurses’
home &c. w hich increased the accom m odation to 650;
