is a civil parish separated from B uck in gh am Â
shire by the riv er Tham es, the villag e being 1 m ile
south-east from th e G reat W estern railw ay station at
M aidenhead, 5 north-w est from W indsor, and 10 sou th Â
east from H e n le v ; the parish com prises within its lim its
the divisions of B rav village, B ray W ick , K im bers,
Touchen E nd, E a st O akley and Boyne H ill, and is in
the E astern division of the county, hundred of Brav,
Maidenhead p etty sessional division. M aidenhead union,
W indsor cou nty cou rt d istrict, rural deanery of M aidenÂ
head, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford.
B rav is supposed to be on the site of the Rom an station
â B ib racte,â b u t ceased to be a place of im portance when
th e Rom an svstem of com m unications fell into d isu se ; it
is now within the lib erty of W indsor Forest, being part
nf the Royal demesne. B ray C u t is an artificial cu ttin g
filled from sp rin gs; it em pties itself into the_ river
Tham es, b u t is not navigable. The church of S t M ichael,
b u ilt in the reign of E dw ard I. is an edifice of flint, sandÂ
stone and chalk, in the E a rly E n glish and Perpendicular
stvles. consisting of chancel, w ith north and south chapels,
nave of three bays, aisles and a m assive em battled tower
w ith bold angle-buttresses on the south side and conÂ
tain in g 6 bells and a c lo c k ; the tower is of four stages,
the low erm ost form in g a p o r c h : the m assive oak roofs
of the nave and aisles are said to date from the 13th
c e n tu ry ; the fabric was repaired and restored in 1859
at a great cost, under the superintendence of Thom as

W ya tt esq. : over th e m ain south _entrance w ithin a
niche is a sculptured figure of S. M ich a el: in 1906 two
handsom e dorm er windows w ere erected in the chancel:
the windows are nearly all stained : there are 800 si
tings, 447 being free. Th e register dates from the year
i6s6. The livin g is a vicarage, n et yea rly value £ 501'
w ith residence, in the g ift of the Bishop of Oxford, and
held since 1887 by the Rev. C harles Andrewes Raym ond
M .A. and late scholar of M agdalene College, Cambridge^
The churchyard has been closed for some years, but
there is a cem etery in the W indsor road for th a t porÂ
tion of the parish which is apart from the Touchen End
district. The cem etery is divided into consecrated and
unconsecrated portions, and is controlled b y the
Council. W illiam G oddard esq. in the year 1627 founded
and endowed an hospital, called Jesusâ Hospital, ana
placed it under the governm ent of th e Fishm ongers
C om pany of London, of w hich he was a m em b er; the
buildings consist of a chapel and 40 houses, form in g a
quadrangle w ith cultivated gardens in the centre and at
the b a c k ; six of the inm ates m ust be free of the above
com pany, and these if single receive u s . and if m arried
16s. a week, in cludin g Mr. Jerem iah Coppingâs g i f t ; all
the other occupants, who are parishioners of B ray, have
when single 6s. and when m arried 8s. 6d. per week,
besides other allowances ; the Rev. Thom as John Price
A .K .C .L . has been resident warden and chaplain since
