street, have a fro n ta g e of 260 feet, broken b y tw o
battlemented to w e rs , w it h g a te w a y s ap p ro ach ed
by
flights of s t e p s ; th e in te r io r is d iv id e d in to tw o
quadrangles, th e first of w h ic h , 100 fe e t sq u a re , h a s on
its south side th e ch ap el and h a l l ; th e fo rm e r w as r e ­
stored by th e la t e S ir G ilb e r t S c o t t R .A , in 1862, w hen
the roof was Tenew ed, and a new e a st w in d o w in s e r t e d ;
the wood ca rv in g w as e x e c u te d b y R o b e rt B a rk e r, in
1695* and th e n o rth and s o u th w in d ow s b y V a n L in g e ,
in 1641; there are m o n u m en ts to S ir W illia m Jones
M.A. d. 27 A p r il, 1794 (b y F la x m a n ) , an d to T h o m a s ,
son of S ir J . C. M u s g ra v e b art. d . 18 22 ; h e re also is
an urn c o n ta in in g th e ash es of S ir E d w in A rn o ld
K .C .I.E ., C .S .I . d . 22 M a rch , 19 0 4; th e re are also

The hall w as co m p leted in 1657 an d r e fitte d in 176 6 :
in 1904 it w as e n la r g e d , b e in g e x te n d e d fo r a b o u t 24
feet in the d ire ctio n of th e F e llo w s’ g a r d e n : th e o r ig in a l
hammer b eam ro o f, w h ic h e x iste d a b o v e th e la te r
plaster c e ilin g , a w o rk of p s e u d o -G o th ic s ty le , w as
uncovered, th e p la s te r c e ilin g b e in g r e m o v e d : th e
timbers of th e o r ig in a l ro o f, one of w h ic h b o re d a te
1656, have been la r g e ly ren e w e d an d th e ro o f co n tin u e d
in the sam e d e sig n o v er th e new e x t e n s io n : th e w a lls
are hung w ith n u m e ro u s v a lu a b le p o r t r a i t s : in 1892
a new range of k itc h e n offices w as b u ilt on th e s ite of
the old b u ild in g s, th e n re m o v e d .
A b o v e t h e p rin c ip a l
gate is a s ta tu e of Q u een A n n e , an d u p o n th e in n e r
side a statu e o f J a m e s I I . one o f t h e o n ly tw o sta tu e s
of this k in g su p p o sed to e x is t in E n g la n d , th e o th e r
being in fro n t of th e new A d m ir a lt y b u ild in g s in th e
Green P ark , L o nd on : th e second q u a d r a n g le , a b o u t 80
feet square, e re cte d ch ie fly b y th e b e n e fa ctio n of D r.
Radcliffe, has above th e g a te , on th e e x te r io r , a s ta t u e of
of Mary, d a u g h ter o f J am e s I I . and co n s o rt of W illia m
III. and on th e sid e w ith in t h e c o u r t a s ta t u e of
Dr. John B ad cliffe. A n ew M a ste r’s L o d g e w as erected
beyond th is q u a d ra n g le in 1879, fro m th e d e sig n s of
Messrs. B od ley and G a rn e r, a r c h ite c ts , of L o n d o n . In
the common room is a b u s t of K i n g A lfr e d , b y W ilto n ;
and po rtra its, b u rn t in w ood b y D r. G riffit h s , o f th e
Earl of L e ic e s te r a n d H e n ry IV . T h e n ew lib r a r y w as
built in 1860-1, fro m d e s ig n s b y th e la t e S ir G ilb e r t
Scott E .A . an d is in th e D e c o ra te d s t y l e : it co n ta in s
fine statues of L o rd s E ld o n a n d S to w e ll, w ho w ere b o th
members of th is c o lle g e , a n d a b u s t of W illia m P itt.
To the w est are th e new b u ild in g s of t h e c o lleg e,
erected in 1845 fro m th e d e sig n s of th e la t e S ir C h a rle s
Barry. In 1906 N o . 90 H ig h stre e t w as in c o rp o ra te d
with the college. In 1887 a new t u t o r ’s h o u se w as b u ilt
on the south sid e of th e lib r a r y , t h e R a d c liffe to w er
restored, and in 1890 th e u p p e r p o rtio n of th e to w er
above the p o rter’ s lo d g e w as re s to re d , th e w h o le b e in g
carried out u n d e r th e d ir e c tio n of M r. H . W . M o o re,
architect. In 1894 in c re a s e d a c co m m o d a tio n w as g iv e n
for u n d erg ra d u ate s b y a lte r a tio n s in th e n ew b u ild in g s
and the erectio n of a b lo ck of b u ild in g s on th e o th e r side
of Logic la n e ; in 1902 th e la r g e m a n sio n a t th e H ig h
street corner of th e la n e, lo n g o cc u p ie d b y th e co lleg e
under the nam e of U n iv e rs ity H a ll, w as ta k e n d o w n an d
rebuilt in stone an d b r ic k w ith o ak fr a m in g , a n d in
1905, after som e litig a t io n w ith th e c i t y , it w as u n ite d
to the college b y a c o v e re d b r id g e , fro m d e s ig n s by
Messrs. W ilk in so n an d Co. of O x fo r d , th e r ig h t s of
