quadrangular in form . On th e south side is a gateway
tow er w ith an oriel window. On the n orth side of
the quadrangle are th e common room s, & above them
the dining hall, w ith oak floor & panelling & oak open
roof. The students' room s are arranged in sets on
the east & w est sides. E very student has his own
private stu d y bedroom, & rooms are also provided
for the warden & for other resident m em bers of
the staff. The south-east corner of th e quadrangle
is occupied by the p rin cipal’s lodge.
Th e hall
provides for 77 students.
St.
P a trick ’s H all,
a hall of residence for 65 m en studen ts, was
opened in 1913, in N orthcourt av en u e; R. L. Pearson,
warden. S t. Andrew's H all provides for 80 women
stu d en ts; Miss M. Bolam M .A . warden. W essex H all
was opened in Septem ber, 19x3, for wom en studen ts;
M iss M. F. Sharps B .A . warden. S t. G eorge’s hostel
is in Shinfield road, and provides for 39 women
stu d en ts: Miss J. O rm erod, warden. The session con­

Reading School, E rleig h road, was founded in i486, in
which year John Thorne, A bbot of Reading, having
suppressed the H ospital of S t. John, was directed byHenry V II. to assign its revenues to some charitable
in stitution , in pursuan ce of w hich com m and he estab ­
lished this school, one of his officers, W illiam Dene,
givin g 200 m arks in aid of its foundation.
Queen
E lizabeth granted the school a charter in 1560 & in
th e reign of Charles I. Archbishop L aud, a native of
R eading, le ft £20 a year to th e head m aster & estab­
lished a “ v isitatio n ” of the school, w hich is still
m aintained. It was reconstructed under th e Reading
School A ct, 1867, as a first grade classical & modern
school. The foundation stone of the p resent b uildings,
occupying a plot of ground in Redlands, 13 acres in
exten t & about a m ile south-w est of the town, was
laid by His late M ajesty K in g Edw ard V II. then
Prince of W ales, on Ju ly 1st, 1870, & th ey were
form ally opened b y th e la te Lord H ath erley, then
Lord C hancellor, Sept. n t h , 1871: the whole of the
buildings have been rem odelled, & in addition to the
usual class-room s there is a school chapel to hold 300
boys, also a gym n asiu m , chem ical & physical labora­
tories, m anual instruction shop, arm oury, large tepicl
sw im m ing bath & a large detached S a n a to riu m ; ad ­
join in g are a cricket gTound w ith pavilion & five courts.
There is a classical side for those boys who are p re­
parin g directly for the u n iv e rs itie s ; & a m odern side.
The school year is divided into three term s w ith three
vacations, which are Sp rin g, S u m m er & C h ristm as.
C ardinal W olsey is said, on th e au th ority of A rc h ­
bishop Parker, to have been a short tim e m aster of

at St. John’s College, Oxford, each of £100 a year,
for four years, on the foundation of S ir Thom as
W h ite ; six “ Appleton scholarships ” of £ 5 per annum
