K N O W L H I L L is a scattered village and ecclesiasÂ
tical parish, formed in 1842 out of th e parishes of H u rÂ
ley and W argrave, on the B ath road, 8 m iles n orth Â
east from Reading, 4^ w est from M aidenhead, 5 southÂ
east from H enley and 3$ north-east from Tw yford s ta Â
tion on the G reat W estern railw ay, in the Eastern d iviÂ
sion of the county, M aidenhead p etty sessional division,
unions of W okingham and M aidenhead, R eading county
court district, rural deanery of Maidenhead, archdeaÂ
conry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The ch urch of
S t. P eter, b u ilt in 1840, is a p lain edifice of red brick
with stone dressings, alm ost en tirely covered w ith ivy
and consisting of chancel and nave and a w estern tower
w ith spire, containing 2 b e lls: the chancel, added in
1871, is in the E arly E n g lish s ty le : the fine organ was
erected in 1875, as a m em orial to th e Rev. J. E.
Austen L eigh , a form er v ic a r : the clock in th e tower
was given in m em ory of Major C o u rt: w ith two e x Â
ceptions all the windows are s ta in e d : th ere are 400
sittings. The register dates from the year 1840. The
livin g is a vicarage, net yea rly value £ 195, w ith resiÂ
dence, in the g ift of trustees, and held since 1884 by
the R ev Frederic C am pbell B arham M .A. of Caius
