B U S C O T is a village and parish, pleasantly situated
nn the south bank of the Tham es, which separates it
from O xfordshire, about 4 m iles north-w est from F arin g ­
don and 2 south-east from Lechlade, in the Northern
division of the county, hundred of Shrivenham , petty
sessional division, union and cou n ty cou rt d istrict of
Faringdon, rural deanery of the Vale of W hite Horse,
archdeaconry of B erks and diocese of Oxford. The
church of S t. M ary is an ancient edifice of stone, in
the E arly E nglish and Perpendicular styles, consisting
#f chancel, nave, south porch and an em battled western
tower, containing 3 b e lls ; in the church are a few
mural ta b le ts; it was re-seated and repaired at the
•xpense of a form er re c to r ; the stained east window,
designed by the late S ir E dw ard Burne-Jones bart.
(d. 1898), was presented in 1892 by Sir A . Henderson
bart. M .P ., j . P . of B uscot Park, in m em ory of his
fa th e r; he also gave a handsom e p u lp it in 1908, w ith
panels painted by M abuse : there are about 200 sittin gs :
the oak lvch gate was also erected by S ir A . Henderson
in 1897. The register dates from the year 1676. The
living is a rectory, net incom e £ 3 61, w ith residence
and 52 acres of glebe, in th e g ift of S ir A lexander
Henderson bart. and held since 1901 bv the Rev.
W illiam Davenport M .A. of C lare C o lle g e ,' C am bridge.
The B ap tist chapel here was erected in 1880. Th e v il­
lage hall and reading room, erected in 1897 by Sir A.
Henderson bart. J.P . is used for concerts and m eet­
ings. The annual interest accruing from a sum of
£1,166 13s. 4d. in £2% per Cent. Consols, le ft bv Mrs.
Nash, of Maidenhead, at the request of her late
husband, form erly a sugar refiner of London, to be
appropriated by the churchwardens and overseers for
the yearly purchase of coats for 20 poor m en and gowns
and petticoats for 20 poor women residing in the

Buscot Park, th e seat of S ir A lexander
Henderson bart. M .P ., J .P . was b u ilt by E dw ard Lovedem
Loveden esq. about 1780, and is a m ansion of stone,
surrounded by gardens, skirted by an extensive park,
which contains two lakes, one of about 25 acres and
another of 15 a c re s : over th e first is a bridge of three
arch es: in 1890 th e house was enlarged and im proved,
and a bachelors’ w in g and a “ squash ” rackets court
added at the w est e n d ; in th e house is a series of
pictures by S ir E. Burne-Jones, illu stratin g th e legend
of “ Th e S leepin g B eauty,’’ as well as panel paintings
by the same artist. S ir A lexan d er H enderson b art.
M .P., J .P . is lord of th e m anor and th e chief owner
and occupier of th e land. Th e Dean and students of
C h rist C h u rch and the W arden and Fellow s of New
C ollege, Oxford, are also landowners in th is parish.
The soil is various, m ostly strong c la y ; subsoil, clay.
The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turn ips and
clover. The area is 2,827 seres of land and 60 of w a te r;
rateable value, £4,250 ; th e population in 1911 was 429.
