U n iversity Colleg?, Reading, was founded in 1892. T h e
C ollege is now one of th e fourteen E n glish u n iv er­
sities & colleges in receip t of a T rea su ry g ra n t for the
furth eran ce of U n iversity work. I t is affiliated to the
U n iversity of Oxford. I t provides com plete courses
of in struction for the degree exam ination s (external)
in arts & science of the U n iversity of London. I t is
subsidised b y the Board of A g ricu ltu re, & its facilities
for train in g in ag ric u ltu re, d a iryin g & h orticu ltu re
for m en & women are un u sually com plete. I ts students
are able to obtain diplom as in a g ricu ltu re, d a iryin g
& h orticultu re, aw arded, after exam ination, by a
com m ittee rep resen tative of th e U n iversity of O xford
& the U n iversity College. T h ey are also prepared for
the
degree exam ination in ag ricu ltu re of the
U niversity of London. Th e C ollege is recognised for
th e training of teachers for elem en tary schools by the
Board of E ducation .
Students in th e elem en tary
train in g departm ent are able to follow courses of
study leading to a U n iversity degree in arts or
science. T h e College is also recognised b y the Board
of E ducation as a training college for wom en teachers
for secondary schools. P relim in ary scientific courses
are provided for m edical & dental students. Th ere
are departm ents of fine arts, includin g in struction in
m ethods of teaching, & com m erce & technical sub­
jects. T here is in addition a large system of evening
classes. Th e College buildings occupy a site of about
6 acres, & include a hall, capable of seating 1,000
p ersons; a gym n asiu m , the Old Red b uildin g, in
w hich are lecture room s, studen ts’ b u ttery & com m on
ro o m s ; the School of M u s ic ; th e A cacias buildin g
(form erly th e home of the late M r. G eorge P alm er),
which contains tho C ollege lib ra ry of about 10,000
volum es and the common room s for professors &
le c tu r e rs ; the fine a rt studios & craft w o rk sh o p s;
the laboratories for zoology, botany, physics, ag ric u l­
ture & c h e m is try ; the B ritish D airy I n s t it u t e ; &
there is also a b u ild in g devoted to geog rap h y, com ­
m erce & technical subjects. A t Shinfield is a College
farm , 140 acres in exten t, w hich is used for a g ri­
c u ltu ral teach in g & research. Th ere are tw o h orti­
cu ltu ral stations, one of 4 acres ad join in g the College,
& the other of 11 acres for fr u it grow ing, & form in g
p art of the College farm a t Shinfield. Th ere is an
ath letic ground. A ll students tak in g a fu ll course of
day study m u st reside in a hall of residence, or
hcstel, or house recognised by th e C ollege, unless th ey
reside w ith th eir parents or guardians, or unless they
hold th e w ritten perm ission of the p rin cipal to reside
elsewhere. W antage H all, a hall of residence for men
students, was opened a t the b egin n in g of the A utum n
term , 1908, & was th e g ift of L a d y W antage, one of
H K R K S.
