c a ta lo g u e , it s e lf 600 y e a r s o ld , of th e docum ents then
in p o sse ssion of th e W a r d e n a n d F ello w s. In the
ch a p e l, fo rm e rly u s e d a s th e p a ris h c h u rc h of St. John
th e B a p tis t u n til t h e u n io n of t h a t p a ris h in 1891 with
th e p a ris h of S t . P e t e r ’ s - in -th e - E a s t, is a m ural monom en t w ith b u s t an d in s c rip tio n to S ir T hom as Bodley
k n t. fo u n d e r o f th e B o d le ia n lib r a r y , d . 28 Jan. 1612;
also a m a r b le m u r a l m o n u m en t t o A n th o n y a Wood,

I n 1889 th e roofs of the
b u ild in g s in th e F e llo w s ’ Q u a d w e re p a rtia lly restored,
an d d u r in g 1893 s e v e ra l ch im n e y sta c k s w ere rebuilt.
T h e s t a t u t e s g iv e n b y th e fo u n d e r in 1274 were in force
t ill th e c o m m issio n of 1854, w h en th e y w ere in a great
m ea su re su p e rs e d e d b y an o rd in a n c e w h ic h swept away
v e r y m a n y of t h e ir p ro v isio n s , b u t t h is has now given
p lac e to th e n e w s ta t u t e s sa n ctio n e d b y Parliament in
M a y , 1882, u n d e r w h ic h th e fo u n d a tio n consists of a
W ard e n , a n u m b e r o f F e llo w s, w h ic h shall not be less
th a n n in e te en , a n d m a y b e r a is e d to tw enty-six, two
C h a p la in s , e ig h te e n or m o re P o s tm a s te r s and four Lxh ib itio n e r s ; t h e r e is also an E x h ib itio n fund, for the
p u rp o se of a s s is tin g poor stu d e n ts a n d prom oting study
am o n g th e u n d e r g r a d u a te m e m b e rs of th e college.
