L E C K H A M P S T E A D (or L eckham stead) is a village
and civ il parish, form ed for law purposes in 1835, and
a d istin ct ecclesiastical parish , form ed in 1882 out of
C h ieveley parish, 7 m iles north from N ew bury, 3$ m iles
north from B oxford station on th e Lam bourn Valley
railw ay, v ia N ew bury, and 3 north-w est from Chieveley,
in the Southern division of th e county, hundred of F aircross. p e tty sessional division, union and county court
d istrict of N ew bu ry, rural deanery of N ew bury, archÂ
deaconry of B erks and diocese of Oxford. Th e church
of S t. Jam es, b u ilt in i860 by th e Rev. J. E. Robinson
M .A. vicar of C hieveley, 1837-72, a form er incum bent,
at a cost of ¿ 1,7 4 5 , and situated in the centre of the
v illage, is an edifice of brick and flint, w ith stone
m ullioned windows, in the G othic style, from designs
b y Mr. S. S. Teulon, architect, of London, consisting of
chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and
a central tu rre t containing one bell: the east window is
s ta in e d : some wood work at the east end of the nave
and th e south porch are m ain ly com posed of portions of
th e ancient oak screen of the form er church, which
stood a m ile from the village, and the p u lp it is
Jacobean: th e ancient fon t has been retained: there are
250 s ittin g s: attached to the church is a burial ground.
The liv in g is a vicarage, n et incom e ¿ 1 5 6 , w ith resiÂ
dence and 13 acres of glebe, in the g ift of the vicar of
C hieveley, and held since 1910 by the Rev. Thom as
Odwyn Jones M .A. of K eble College, Oxford. There is
a W esleyan chapel here, b u ilt in i860, and a P rim itive
M ethodist chapel a t T h icket, erected about 1830 and
reb u ilt in 1874. The W o rkin g Menâs C lub and In stitu te
was erected in 1910 by H. M. M orison esq. and contains
a lib ra ry of 500 v o lu m e s ; it is also used for concerts
and parochial purposes. Th e principal landowners are
Donald K ennedy esq. and Moses B utcher esq. The soil
is sandy lo a m ; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are
wheat, b arley and oats. The area is 1,777 ac re s; Tateable value, ¿ 1 ,7 9 8 ; the population in 1911 was 261.
