E L L E S B O R O T J G - H is a parish, 2 m iles w est from
Wendover station on the M etropolitan and G reat Central
Joint railw ay, 1 m ile east from L ittle K im b le station
on the G reat W estern and G reat C en tral Joint railway
through W ycom be to A ylesb u ry and the N orth, 5$
south from A ylesb u ry and 3 north-east from Princes
Risborough, in the Mid division of th e county, in the
hundred, p etty sessional division and county cou rt dis­
trict of A ylesbury, union of W ycom be, ru ra l deanery
of Wendover, archdeaconry of B uckingham and diocese
of Oxford. The church of S S . Peter and Paul, restored
in 1854 and 1871, is an ancient em battled stru ctu re in
the Late Decorated and Perpendicular styles, situate-d
on a hill close to th e ancient Ickn ield way, and consists
of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch
and a lo fty em battled w estern tower, w ith octagonal
stair tu rret at the south-east angle, containing 6 b e lls :
there is a piscina in the south wall of the chancel, also
handsome stained windows north and south of chancel
and m em orial windows in the nave to the L o vett fa m ily :
in the south aisle, w ithin a recess, is a handsom e m arble
tomb in the Italian style of th e 17th cen tury, w ith a
recumbent figure, to the m em ory of B rig etta , w ife of
Sir H. Croke, d. 1638: on the south w all are some fine
brasses, w ith effigies, to Thom as H aw trey, d. 1544.
and Sybell, his w ife, 11 sons and 7 d au g h ters: a
shield belonging to this brass is p a lim p se st: th e font
is of the Decorated period, and is lined w ith le a d : there
is a richly-carved oak pulpit and le c te r n : the stained
east window was erected in 1901 to the late Mrs.
Frankland-Russell A s tle y : the chancel was reb u ilt in
1871 at the cost of M rs. F ran klan d-R ussell A stley, in
memory of her husband, and her sons in 1901 caused
an elaborate reredos to be erected as a m em orial to
their m o th e r: there are 230 sittin gs. Th e register
dates from 1659. The livin g is a rectory, n et yearly
value £199, w ith residence, in the g ift of M rs. Falcke,
and held since 1912 b y th e R ev. Sidn ey W entworth
Vardon M .A. of K eble C ollege, O xford. Th e church of
the Resurrection, a t DU N SM O RE, was b u ilt in 1897,
chiefly by L ad y S utton, as a chapel of ease to the parish
church, and w ill hold 60 persons, and here is also an
iron Mission hall. There is a C on gregation al chapel at
C H A LK SH IR E , b u ilt in 1873 and seating 100 persons.
A parish hall was erected at B u tlers Cross in 1903 at
a cost of about £1,0 00 ; it is used as a Sunday school,
reading and recreation room , drill hall and for all
parochial purposes. There are alm shouses for two old
men and two old wom en, founded in 1746 by M argaret
Lady Dodd and endowed w ith about 40 acres and ,£2,456
India S to c k ; each inm ate receives 5s. weekly and ¿ 2
yearly for clo th in g; and five out-pensioners receive 6s.
per week e a c h ; the alm shouses are m anaged by five
trustees, under the direction of the C h arity C om m is­
sioners. The poor’s allotm ent is 46a. 2r. 36p.
The
interest of £100 17s. 6d. was le ft in 1837 for the use
of the poor by S ir Robert G reenhill, and is applied
towards the foundation of th e parish h a l l: and the

On th e 21 st Septem ber, 1858, durin g som e digging
operations in Bang’s Field, at T errick, in this parish, the
foundations of a building w ere discovered, lyin g north­
east and south-w est, the whole spreading over an area of
about 1,600 square fe e t; in a kind of cesspool, at the
north-east com er,
some rem ains of earthen ja rs
were fo u n d : a com m unication on this
discovery,
made to the B ucks Arch. Soc, in Dec. 1858, is printed,
with a ground plan in the Society’s Transactions for 1863:

Chequers C ourt, la rg ely re b u ilt b y Mr.
W illiam H aw trey in 1565, is the .property of th e trustees
1 of the late H. J. D. F ran klan d-R ussell A stley esq. L a d y
M ary G rey, sister of L ad y Jane G rey, was im prisoned
1 here, by order of Queen E lizabeth , from 1565 to 1567:
it is at p resen t occupied by Col. A rth u r H am ilton L ee
M .P. who holds i t on a life lease, and who, in 1909,
com pletely restored th e house, rem ovin g its late
G eorgian additions and decorations and successfully
rev iv in g its E lizabeth an c h a ra c te r : the well-wooded
park, some 700 acres in exten t, contains “ C ym belin e’s
C astle,” an early B ritish stronghold and th e rep uted
: birthplace of C aractacus, and also three rem arkable boxclad ravines called “ V elvet L a w n ,” “ S ilv er S p rin g s,”
and “ H appy V a lley.” On Coom be H ill in th is parish,
and the highest point in the cou n ty and of th e C h iltern
range, is a m onum ent, erected in N ov. 1904, to th e
B uckin gh am sh ire m en who fell in th e South A frican
j w a r ; th e cost was defrayed by p ublic subscription. A
j short distance north of the ch urch is a sm all wooded
| dell, into which five springs of w ater issue from th e
h ill, supplyin g a m oderate sized lak e used for th e
grow th of w a tercress; below are some fish pools. T h e
trustees of the late H. J. D. F ran klan d-R ussell A stley
esq. who are lords of the m anor, and Lord R othschild
P .C ., G .C .V .O . are th e p rin cipal landow ners. T h e soil
is variable, prin cip ally chalk and flin t on th e uplands
and a dark loam on low er lands. Th e ch ief crops are
wheat, b arley and oats. Th e area is 3,595 a c r e s ; ra te ­
able value .£5.041; the population in i g n was 519.
