O x fo rd , w h o is also rural dean o f B radfield , and su rroga te. H ere
is a C on grega tion a l church, erected in 1913, a buildin g in red b rick and

T h e field w here th e d is Â
co v e ry w as m ade is at th e w est end o f the village, and k n ow n as the
ballast-hole. F in ds had been p rev iou sly m ade th ere, bu t, w ith the
exception o f an early B ritish ja r o f v ery coarse cla y, n ow in th e p ossesÂ
sion o f a M r. H aw ley , th ey h ave been dispersed o r lost. T h e later finds
in clud e a large q u a n tity o f p o tte ry o f a ll grad es, from th e coa rsest
up to the fine Sam aian w are, querns, b on e im plem ents, a fe w brass
R om an coins, all in a p o o r con d ition , R om an spoon o f b ron ze,
bronze pin w ith green enam el orn a m en ta tion , tw o hum an skulls and
bones, and a v a riety o f oth er articles. T h e north road from S ilchester
is supposed to have crossed a field a d join in g the one w here these finds
were made. T he finds extended o v e r an area of n early 30 acres, and
the ch ie f o f them came from the w ell-k n ow n rubbish pits or m iddens ;
the settlem en t m ust have been a la rge one. R om a n rem ains have also
been foun d at P in cen tâ s farm , at the east end of Theale.
T h e farm
house is an old one, and the farm takes its nam e from an ow n er (John
P in syon ), tem p. E dw a rd III. T h eale, form erly L a th ele or L e th e l, is
so m entioned in all docum ents from the T e s ta de N e v il and the H u n d red
rolls, dow n to th e tim e o f E lizabeth ; it then becom es T h e th el, afterw ards
D heal, and finally T h ea le. I t was form erly in the parish o f T ile h u rs t,
but becam e a separate parish in 1894. T h o p re-R eform a tion chapel o f
L e thel (Theale) belonged to G orin g P r io ry , O xon , and is va lu ed in the
tax o f P o p e N ich olas a t £ 1 yearly.
N unhide farm , in Sulham parish,
b u t close to T h eale, also belon g ed to G orin g P riory , and w a s p rob a b ly
the one hide o rigin a lly gran ted b y the foun der o f G orin g, w h o w as also
the ow ner o f N unhide. H en ry B a rry B la g ra v e esq. of C a lco t P a rk , T ile Â
hurst, is lord o f the m anor and prin cip a l landow ner. T h e soil is ligh t ;
subsoil, gravel and clay. T h e ch ief crops are wheat and b a rlev.
The
area is 1,564 acres o f land and w ater ; rateable, value, £ 8 ,8 7 4 ; the
population in 1911 w as 1,047.
